Board approves appointment of new police officer
Officer Steve Mesiti was sworn in as Brockport’s newest police officer at the June 17 board meeting. Mesiti’s swearing in was witnessed by his parents and his brother, Adam, who is a sergeant with the force. more

Brockport’s Code Enforcement Officer receives commendations
Scott Zarnstorff, Brockport’s code enforcement officer, was commended for his volunteerism in the recent flooding that took place in Newark. more

Celebrating 100 years
Mabelle Robbins, a resident of The Landing of Brockport, will turn 100 years old on July 7, 2002. Mabelle has lived in Hollywood, California, Texas and Florida and then later moved to Rochester. Mabelle has met several famous people including Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez and Ethel Merman. more

Community Development Block Grant-Ogden
Monroe County Legislature President Dennis Pelletier (R/C-Ogden) announced a Community Development Block Grant to provide residents of the Town of Ogden with an Outdoor Water Sports Program, with adaptive recreational equipment for persons with disabilities. more

Gates celebrates summer
The Town of Gates is ready to kick off summer with their annual Gates Summer Celebration which will be held on Sunday, June 30 at the Gates Chili High School fields, 910 Wegman Road. This year's celebration will have a patriotic theme and include a short fireman's parade march down the school road at 6 p.m. more

Hilton Lions recognized
At the Awards Night for the Hilton Lions Club, Ken Robertson was named Hilton Lion of the Year by President Jack Trembley. Robertson is serving as a Zone officer working with the Lions Clubs in Spencerport, Brockport, Hamlin, Greece and Hilton. more

Holley police chief arrested
Three Orleans County police officers, including Holley’s chief of police, were arrested June 17 and charged with cocaine possession, according to New York State Police reports. more

Joint Recreation Committee's future cloudy
The "building on the hill" is changing the way the 40-year old collaborative effort between the towns of Clarkson and Sweden and the Village of Brockport operate recreation programs for its residents. more

July Theme Days planned at Springdale Farm
A series of children's programs, "July Theme Days," will be held at Springdale Farm, 696 Colby Street in Ogden on July 10, 17, 24 and 31 (all Wednesdays) from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. On each Wednesday, presenters will hold an interactive program with an educational theme for youth ages 5-10. more

Marble plaque travels from Texas
to Brockport for firefighters memorial

Dave Gardner's SUV pulled up in front of Brockport Fire Department Station No. 4 on the evening of June 17, completing a trip from Houston, Texas. A small crowd watched him and his nephew, Kevin Johnson, Jr., unload a black marble plaque with "September 11, 2001" spelled out in stark white inlaid marble. Johnson, a Brockport resident and recent St. John Fisher College graduate, has been a volunteer with the fire department for two years. more

New DPW superintendent named in Brockport
A new Department of Public Works Superintendent was named at the Brockport Village Board’s June 17 meeting. Bradley Upson, of Rochester, was appointed to the position. He will officially begin his duties on July 1 but said he is already acclimating himself to the department. more

Renovations begin at St. John's Church
Renovations have begun at St. John the Evangelist Church of Spencerport. The daily masses are now being held in the basement of the prayer center and the Sunday masses are being held in the school building. Parishioners vary in their opinions about the changes. more

Roundtable discussion focus is Erie Canal revitalization
"Can the historic Erie Canal stimulate investment in local communities as it did 177 years ago," mused Mike Heftka, vice chair of the Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor Planning Commission. Heftka serves as a business advisor in the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State College. more

Summer programs offered by GO ART!
July 2 - August 15: Watercolors and mixed media paintings by June Martino entitled "Color My Moods" will be featured in GO ARTS!'s Batavia Gallery, 204 East Main Street. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. Free and open to the public. Opening reception TBA. more

Development Corporation chartered in Brockport
The Greater Brockport Development Corporation has been chartered. The corporation, a 501(3)c non-profit group, was formed as a way for the village to have access to grant money for upgrades and beautification projects. R. Scott Winner, chairman of the Brockport Village Planning Board, was named consultant to the corporation and will act as part-time director. He will receive $25 per hour compensation. more

Monroe County Fair accepting talent show applications
The Monroe County Fair is accepting applications for its annual Talent Show. This year's Talent Show will have a Junior and Senior Category. The Junior Show is open to individuals and groups 12 years of age and under. The Senior Show is open to individuals and groups 13 years of age and up. more

Nursery School scholarships available
The Stone Church Nursery School, 7549 Lake Road South, Bergen, receives United Way funds to help families with limited means register pre-school children for the new year which begins the second week of September. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available. A one page scholarship application form and other information may be obtained by contacting the church office at 494-1847, or by calling Krista, volunteer registrar, at 494-0013. more

Orleans County to look at auxiliary police
The Orleans County Auxiliary police unit and their role in the county will be discussed at a June 26 legislature meeting. more

Residents approve land transfer in Chili
Voters came out June 18 and cast their votes in favor of the transfer of a small parcel of land in a subdivision in Chili. The unofficial vote numbers were: 1,300 in favor and 1,048 against the selling of the parcel of land by the town. more

Teen volunteers needed at the Hamlin Public Library
Teenagers who enjoy working with children and enjoy doing crafts may be interested in volunteering at the Hamlin Public Library. more

Chili Blast U17 team won the U19 Division in Chili Soccer Association's Invitational Tournament held June 7, 8 & 9. more

Students represent colleges in All-Star Baseball Game in Russia
Members of the Monroe Community College men's baseball team have been selected to play on the State University of New York's All-Star Baseball Team that will compete in an international baseball tournament on June 23 through July 1, in Moscow, Russia. SUNY coaches across the state nominated students for the All-Star team based on athletic achievement. The competition will include teams from Japan, South Korea and Russia. more

Summer programs offered at the Ogden Farmers' Library
Registration begins for the children's summer reading game at the Ogden Farmers' Library on July 8. It's a wet and wild summer for children in grades K-6. Auto check-in will be held anytime the library is open. Personal check-in is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday 7 to 8 p.m. more

Tennis players medal winners
Three members of the Salmon Creek Country Club Women's Tennis League in Spencerport not only returned home medal winners from the 2002 Empire State Senior Games held at SUNY Cortland June 5 to 9, but also qualified for the 2003 National Senior Games to be held at Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Virginia May 29-June 9, 2003. more
