Adam Cummings, son of Kevin and Debra Cummings of Churchville and a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, recently graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.


Becky Erbelding of Churchville, has been awarded an Oscar H. Darter Scholarship in history for the 2002-03 academic year at Mary Washington College. The $982 scholarship is awarded to students with traits of distinction that emulate the high standard of achievement exhibited by Dr. Darter during his lifetime. Dr. Darter was a professor in the history department of Mary Washington College from 1926 to 1960.

Erbelding is the daughter of Bruce and Beth Erbelding of Churchville, and is a 1999 graduate of Mercy High School.

A senior majoring in American studies and history, Erbelding is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a history honorary, and is a History Department representative. She has been active in the theatre department, serving as stage manager for the production of "The Glass Menagerie," assistant stage manager for other productions. A past recipient of the Oscar H. Darter Scholarship and the N.C. Jones Scholarship, Erbelding has been named to the dean's list. She will be working with a permanent exhibit in Washington, D.C., this summer at the Holocaust Museum.


Michelle Phillips, age 9, of Spencerport, a student at Terry A. Taylor Elementary School, received honorable mention in the April 2002 Cricket League writing competition. For this contest, each entrant was asked to write a story about a musical instrument. Michelle's name appears in the July 2002 issue of the magazine. Each month "Cricket" sponsors a different and unique writing or art competition, with seven to eight hundred entries pouring in each time from enthusiastic readers.


Nicholas Falco, a 2001 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, was awarded the "CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics for Excellence in Freshman Chemistry" from the University of Buffalo. This award recognizes academic achievements of the top one percent of students in the Chemistry program. Falco also achieved dean's list honors for the spring 2002 semester with a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of Cathy and Gene Falco of Robbin Crescent in Ogden.


Cindy J. De Felice, a resident of Bergen, received a bachelor of fine arts degree cum laude in art and design from the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University during commencement exercises May 18, at McLane Center on the AU campus.

De Felice is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion P. De Felice of Bergen. She is a graduate of Byron-Bergen High School.


Drew Grobengieser of Ronald Circle, Spencerport, has been named to the dean's list for the spring quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A first-year student in RIT's B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Grobengieser is studying information technology. He is the son of Bill and Laura Grobengieser of Spencerport and a 2001 graduate of E. J. Wilson High School.


Candi Bogues, daughter of Lorna Bogues of Spencerport, received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from Grove City College in ceremonies held May 18.


Peter Montenaro IV, son of Peter and Mary Montenaro, Spencerport, has been named to the dean's list at the University of Notre Dame for outstanding scholarship during the spring semester.

The dean's list is comprised of a select group of students who have succeeded in maintaining a scholastic average of 3.4 and above during the past semester.

Montenaro, a 2000 graduate of Spencerport High School, will be a junior in the University's College of Engineering and College of Arts and Letters, majoring in computer science.


Gina Montenaro, daughter of Peter and Mary Montenaro, Spencerport, was graduated May 19 from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor's degree in history, from the College of Arts and Letters. Montenaro was also named to the dean's list for outstanding scholarship during the spring semester.

The dean's list is comprised of a select group of students who have succeeded in maintaining a scholastic average of 3.4 and above during the past semester at Notre Dame.

Montenaro is a 1998 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Elisabeth VanScoter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin O. VanScoter of Spencerport, received a bachelor of science degree in business management from Grove City College in ceremonies held May 18.


Matthew John Grimm, of Byron, graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, on May 12, with a major in media communication. A total of 208 students graduated and joined the ranks of Asbury alumni who now live and work in approximately 76 counties.

Grimm is the son of Rev. and Dr. Nelson J. Grimm, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Grimm of Hamlin, and Mr. and Mrs. William Sittig of North Chili.


Michael Mikolaichik of Huffer Road, Hilton, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester. An education major, Mikolaichik is a graduate of Hilton High School and the son of Terry and Barbara Mikolaichik.


Christyna Cain, an eighth grade student at the Oliver Middle School in Brockport, has been awarded second place in the Gateway to Technology logo contest.

The national competition was sponsored by Project Lead the Way, an alliance that promotes the study of pre-engineering programs at the secondary school level. Cain created her design in the technology lab at the Oliver Middle School. She received $100 as her prize.

She is the daughter of Marleen Cain of Brockport.


Brett W. Hendershot, Clarkson Parma Town Line Road, Hilton, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

He is majoring in heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology.

The following students enrolled in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University were among the academic degree candidates honored at the University 's 148th commencement ceremony held May 12 in the University's Carrier Dome.

Maureen Carroll, Maplewood Avenue, Spencerport. Carroll received a bachelor of fine arts degree in art photography.

Colleen Dembs, Brook Valley Drive, Rochester. Dembs received a bachelor of science degree in speech communication.


Kevan Raymond Hover, son of Gayle and Terry Hover, Havenwood Drive, Brockport, graduated from the Cary, North Carolina Fire-Rescue Academy on May 8.

Hover is employed by the city of Cary as a firefighter. The Cary Fire Department is one of only 59 departments nationwide certified by the National Fire Service Accreditation Program.


Katrina ScKim and Patrick Schmidt, Ogden, has been named to the spring 2002 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. Schmidt, a freshman, is an elementary-special education major.


Jeffrey McFiggins, of Woodstock Lane, Clarkson, has been named to the dean's list for the spring quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A fifth-year student in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, McFiggins is studying electrical engineering. He is the son of Dennis and Madeline McFiggins of Woodstock Lane and a 1997 graduate of Brockport High School.


Nathaniel Emmerson, son of Debbie and Bruce Emmerson of Crestview Drive, Brockport was named to the spring dean’s list at Denison University.

Emmerson, a 2001 graduate of Brockport High School, is a junior Latin major at Denison. Area students named to the dean's list at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili include the following, with honors (grade point average from 3.30 to 3.59), high honors (grade point average from 3.60 to 3.84) or highest honors (grade point average range from 3.85 to 4.0) noted. Nathaniel Emmerson, son of Debbie and Bruce Emmerson of Crestview Drive, Brockport was named to the spring dean’s list at Denison University.

David Charles Caswell of Hilton, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy on May 29. He received a bachelor of science degree in biology and was commissioned a second lieutenant by his brother-in-law, 2Lt. Thomas B. Younker, formerly of Hilton.

While at the academy, Caswell was able to achieve not only academic excellence - Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society and graduated 97th of 929 graduating cadets, but also military honors and experience - marksman, soaring, jump wings, and a private pilot license.

He was recently assigned to undergraduate jet pilot training at Columbus Air Force base Mississippi. He will be headed there in August with aspirations to become a fighter pilot.


Katherine Longer, daughter of Ken and Debbie Longer of Kendall graduated from Pennsylvania Culinary School, receiving a degree in pastry arts.

While at Pennsylvania Culinary, Longer was named to the president's list for maintaining a grade point average above 3.5.


The following local residents have been named to the dean's list at SUNY Brockport for the spring 2002 semester. The students each earned a minimum grade point average of 3.25, carrying a minimum of six credits to receive the dean's list designation.

Jillian Parkhurst of Brockport, a senior majoring in music education in the School of Education and College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, received the Helen Falk-Julius Kahn Fund Award at the college's awards convocation held May 11.

The Helen Falk-Julius Kahn Fund Award is presented annually by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts to a student dedicated to music education on the basis of academic excellence.


Anna Roggow of Brockport, a senior majoring in music industry in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, received the Melvin Douglas Soyars Music Industry Award at the college's awards convocation held May 11.

The Melvin Douglas Soyars Music Industry Award is presented annually by the School of Music in honor of longtime professor and chair of the music industry program.

Kristen Syfert, Creamery Road, Bergen. Syfert received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics.

Amie Hueber, Haverhill Drive, Churchville. Hueber received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

Kathryn Lang, West Kendall Road, Holley. Lang received a bachelor of arts degree in biology.


Emilie Hilbert of Spencerport has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the University of Connecticut. Hilbert is a senior majoring in journalism at UConn.

To be included on the dean's list students must carry at least 12 credit hours and rank in the upper 25th percentile of students in the school or college they are enrolled in.

This summer, Hilbert is writing for the consumer website insure.com as an editorial intern.

She is the daughter of Anne Hilbert of Spencerport and William Hilbert of Hilton.


Spencerport resident Elizabeth H. Brown graduated magna cum laude from Marietta College in May of 2002 with a bachelor of arts degree in music and radio/television. Brown is the daughter of Donna and Steven Brown of Spencerport. Brown was a recipient of the Carleton Knight III Memorial Award, which is given annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the mass media program at Marietta College. Recipients are selected by the faculty of the Department of Mass Media.


Shannon Lynn Granville of Spencerport, was recently named to the dean's list at the College of William and Mary for the spring 2002 semester. In order to achieve dean's list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student in the School of Arts and Sciences must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 quality point average during the semester.
