Maximum speed limit on Rt. 531 increased to 65 m.p.h.

The maximum speed limit on Route 531 in Monroe County was raised to 65 m.p.h. June 27. Governor Pataki recently signed the legislation that gives the State DOT authority to raise the maximum state speed limit on this stretch of highway.

More than 50,000 motorists who travel this highway between Rt. 36 in Spencerport and the junction of I-490 in Rochester will benefit from an easier commute, according to the New York Sate Department of Transportation.

The state DOT conducted a traffic study and found the geometrics of the highway including the spacing of interchanges, the number and condition of existing travel lanes and existing behaviors of motorists would support a higher speed limit.
