girls capture Irondequoit crown

On May 18 and 19 the Hilton Heat Under 14 girls soccer team participated in the Irondequoit Soccer Tournament and brought home the first place trophies. Hilton finished the weekend with a 3-0-1 record on the way to being crowned with their divisional championship.

In their first game, the Heat beat the Greece Buccaneers 2-1. Hilton opened the scoring with a nice goal by Julia Kennedy, assisted by Patty Nellis. After the Bucs tied the score at 1-1 Sarah Eichas scored the game winner by blasting a shot into the side netting for the 2-1 victory. Hilton's next opponent was Honeoye Falls, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Heat took the early lead on a goal by Kathleen McCarthy, assisted by Kayleigh Moriarty and Valerie Sherwood. Honeoye Falls tied the game late in the match on a mad scramble in front of the net.

Their third game, played on a very chilly Sunday afternoon that brought snowfall, was against the host club Irondequoit. Deanna Petruzzo played a beautiful ball, splitting two defenders, to Patty Nellis who put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. In the second half Sarah Eichas added an insurance goal for the 2-0 win. After Patty Nellis served a beautiful corner kick, Sarah showed some great composure receiving the ball under pressure, making a move to beat the defender and netting the ball from 8 yards out.

In the Championship match, the Heat met the Greece Buccaneers again. After a very hard fought and well played game by both teams, Hilton came out on top with a 1-0 victory. Sarah Eichas scored the only goal of the game, her third of the tournament, assisted by Carley Hartman and Rachael Radtke.

Goalkeeper Daniella Pettinari earned two shutouts while orchestrating a very organized and stingy defense that only allowed two goals all weekend. Anchoring the defense was Erica Kaplan, Valerie Sherwood, Carley Hartman, Alexandra Eberhardt, and Lindsay DeBellis. Providing some great and important midfield play were Sarah Eichas, Lindsey Ames, Kayleigh Moriarty, Deanna Petruzzo, Julia Kennedy, Rachael Radtke and Jennifer Anten. Leading the attack were forwards Patty Nellis, Katie Nellis, Kathleen McCarthy, and Meagan Kruzienga. The team is coached by Dave Ames and Ken Nellis.
