Jarkowski named Player of the Year

Churchville-Chili junior Chris Jarkowski was named Player of the Year in Division I boy’s tennis for the 2002 season.

Jarkowski, undefeated over the past two years in league action, had a 14-0 record this season playing first singles for the Saints. "He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached," said head coach Carl McDonough. "I coached Mike Kelly who was also one of the best - he’s playing at the Division I college level at Niagara University as their #1 player and Chris is right up there."

Jarkowski, captain of the Churchville-Chili team, was one of just three area players to qualify for the state tournament in Flushing Meadows. He entered unranked and won his first match before losing to the fifth seed. He has a 27-0 record in league play dating back to late in his freshman year for the Saints.

"His mental game was much better this season," said McDonough. "His concentration was the best he’s had and he never got distracted. With the outside coaching he’s getting, he’s got his serve approaching the 125 MPH range."
