Fireworks canceled due to school construction

Spencerport Canal Days committee members are adding an evening’s entertainment to their usual full schedule of performances during the two-day festival July 27 and 28 -- a street dance featuring the high energy band Rochester Brass and Electric Company. With a canalside setting at the Gazebo near the Spencerport Firemen’s Exempt Club, and refreshments available from Barton’s Parkside Hots and from Java John’s, the scene is set for a summertime event of music and dance.

Due to construction at the usual Canal Days fireworks site, the traditional display for fireworks has to be canceled for this year, Spencerport Canal Days Committee Chairman Patrick Hotchkiss said last week. The new street dance will run from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.

Another new feature at the summer festival is a canoe race scheduled for Sunday, July 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. Any business, organization or individual can enter. While the main prize will be for the fastest canoe, the fun of the event will be who decorates their canoe with the most imagination, committee members say. The object is to decorate a canoe any way the sponsor or paddlers like, using a business logo, an organization’s theme, or anything that will add to the fun and catch the judges’ eyes.

Neighborhoods are also invited to participate in the race -- two heats, two canoes at a time.

Prize awards will be presented at the gazebo following the race. The winner of the heats will receive $200. Other prizes include: Most Imaginative - $20; Most Elegant - $20; Most Colorful - $20. Best time will earn a blue ribbon, second best time a red ribbon, third best time a yellow ribbon.
