Whether it’s because of Oprah Winfrey’s efforts to get American adults reading, or the lack of anything but reruns on television, reading is booming on the westside, according to local librarians and others who head up area book clubs. more

Brockport sets appointments at annual meeting
Brockport held its annual reorganizational meeting July 15. Appointments and adoptions were made for the following year. The adoptions are not official until they are voted on and approved by the trustees at the August meeting. more

Brockport to unveil memorial monument
They gave their lives to help save others. As part of their daily routines, firefighters, policemen and emergency medical service workers face life and death decisions. They face extraordinary situations, like the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. As a way to memorialize and remember those who lost their lives, the Brockport Fire Department will be unveiling and dedicating a Firefighter’s Memorial Monument. more

Cobblestone Society members from a six-county area are girding for their 29th annual Antiques and Collectibles Fair and Quilt Show on Saturday, August 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Society's museum ground in Childs. more

Hilton resident wins horse competitions
Nicole Gavigan, daughter of Chris and Mary Gavigan, Hilton, recently participated in the Appaloosa Club's Horsemen's Competition where she was awarded the Grand Champion ribbon for the novice division age 14 to 18. more

New pastors lead Parma Church
Pastors Alma and Brent Thompson will be providing worship leadership at the Parma Free Methodist Church, according to the Genesee Conference of the Free Methodist denomination. more

Second crow tests positive for West Nile virus
A dead crow found in the village of Webster has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), according to Monroe County health officials. Statewide more than 30 birds have been reported with WNV. In addition, a crow found in the town of Perinton last month was the first time the virus was detected in Monroe County this year. more

Session updates public on Tributary 3 cleanup
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and the Monroe County Health Department will hold a public availability session for the former General Electric/Black & Decker and the former 3M/Dynacolor sites in Brockport. more

Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance receives two needed gifts
The Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance received two needed gifts recently. The Spencerport Rotary purchased a Pulse Oximeter, and the state granted the station $22,000 to put toward the purchase of a first response vehicle. more

St. Joseph's Villa Alumni gathering August 3
More than 60 former children once served by St. Joseph's Villa, and their families, will visit the agency's main campus in Greece, Saturday, August 3, for an event honoring the Villa's 60th anniversary. more

The musical "Crazy for You" to be
presented by Westside Theatre Productions

The musical "Crazy for You" featuring the music of George and Ira Gershwin will be presented free of charge by Westside Theatre Productions in conjunction with the Town of Riga Recreation Department. more

Trinidad & Tobago Steelband to perform at Orleans Marine Park
The Trinidad and Tobago Steelband will grace the shores of Oak Orchard Creek on Saturday, August 10 at the Orleans County Marine Park. The concert is part of a two-day event at the park that includes "A Taste of Orleans" and a wooden boat festival. The music will begin at 7 p.m. under the new pavilion at the south end, and admission is free. more

Troop 53 scout earns Eagle rank
Boy Scout Troop 53 honored David Zambuto for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Friends and family were in attendance at the United Methodist Church in Churchville on June 8, to acknowledge his achievements. more

Two original one-act plays to be presented by Riga Recreation
Two original one-act plays, "Interrupting Tangents" and "Character," will be performed at the Raymond Adams Cobblestone Hall in Churchville. These productions are being presented by the Town of Riga Recreation and are directed by former Spencerport student Bill Perry, 17, and Churchville-Chili graduate Ryan Toyama, 20, the author of the two works. more

Marianne Smith's Exotic Pet Show is coming to the Parma Public Library on Tuesday, August 6 and Thursday, August 8 at 2 p.m. The cast of live characters on hand include hedgehogs, a binturong, a bearded dragon, sugar gliders, tarantulas, a monitor lizard, giant hissing cockroaches and, of course, our favorite 13' phython "Clyde." more

Mike Lissow, Fire Chief, was on hand Thursday, July 19 to present crown, sashes, flowers, trophies and car signs to this year's winners Brandy Klimack, Queen, and Alex Abrams, King. more

Lakeside Gymkhana rides again
The third annual Lakeside Gymkhana is scheduled for September 7. The timed horseback events will start at 11 a.m. at Manitou Hills Farm in Hilton. more

Leaders for Hamlin/Clarkson Lakeside Campaign named
Becky McCorry-Campbell of Hamlin and Stan Pogroszewski of Clarkson have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the Hamlin/Clarkson Committee for Lakeside's "Building for the Next Generation" Capital Campaign. This $3 million project will renovate Lakeside Memorial Hospital's existing OB Department and expand the Surgical Department. more

Marino receives Rotary's "Citizen of the Year" award
Susan Marino of Spencerport recently received Spencerport Rotary's first "Citizen of the Year" award for her fundraising efforts on behalf of the Peter Bacher Memorial Skateboard Park installed last year in Pineway Ponds Park. more

Stunt bicycle champion comes to Hamlin
June 15, the Hamlin Youth Group, with a grant from The American Lung Association, brought Chris Poulos to Hamlin for a stunt bicycle show. Chris Poulos is a leader in the Extreme Sports industry and the 1991 World Bicycle Stunt Champion. more

BOCES 2 announces new executive principal
Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES appointed Joseph Salemi as executive principal of the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center. Salemi, who has been principal at the school since 1992, began his new role on July 1. more

Brockport High School Class of 1952 holds reunion
The Brockport High School Class of 1952 celebrated their 50th class reunion the last weekend in June. A tour of their "old high school" (now the Oliver Middle School) was given by Principal Ann Sweeting. more

Holley Middle School students donate to special causes
The Holley Middle School Student Council held four dances and had a penny war in the fall. more

Holley Schools recognize board member's 15 years of service
For Albert Buell, community service is an important part of life. He recently completed his 15th-year on the Holley Board of Education, four of which he served as president and three as vice president. more

Holley Student Council donates to Lakeside
Holley Middle School Student Council members made a gift to Lakeside Memorial Hospital's Pre-Admission Testing Department of kid-size tables and chairs, movies, books, games and toys. The items will be put to good use by many children who must go through pre-admission testing or are in the hospital for same-day surgery. A place to color and read and movies to help pass the time will be appreciated by the children. more

MCSBA president is Churchville resident
North Chili resident and Churchville-Chili Board of Education president Sheryl Johnson was recently elected president of the Monroe County School Boards Association. Johnson served as MCSBA's vice president during the 2001-2002 school year. Her service with the association includes co-chairing the MCSBA Legislative Committee as well as serving on the Steering Committee. more

Through the generosity of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, John F. Wegman fund, the Sweden Senior Center has purchased two Pacemaster Pro Elite Treadmills and two Vision Fitness Recumbent Bikes. more

Senior Day planned at Monroe County Fair
Senior Day at the 2002 Monroe County Fair has this year been teamed with Kids' Day giving senior grandparents an opportunity to bring their grandchildren to the fair at the reduced cost. This special event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31 at the Fairgrounds in Henrietta. Seniors, ages 60 and up, will have free gate admission between noon and 4 p.m. with kids 12 and under having free gate admission all week. A special discounted, unlimited ride wristband will be available between noon and 4 p.m. on that day. more

Clemente All Stars win state tournament
The 15 year olds Clemente All Star team of Monroe County Babe Ruth defeated the North Syracuse 15 year olds All Stars 8 to 6 in North Syracuse Sunday, July 21 to win the Western New York State Tournament. more

Covella leads west All-Stars
Division III Player of the Year, A.J. Covella of Spencerport, leads a group of eleven area players on the West All-Star team for the 20th Annual Eddie Meath football game August 3 at Fauver Stadium, University of Rochester at 7 p.m. more

Empire State Games area preview
The 25th Empire State Games will be held in the Cortland/Syracuse area with Opening ceremonies July 31 and competition August 1 to 4. Western Monroe County and eastern Orleans County is represented well by dozens of athletes in both the scholastic and open divisions. more

Holley Rod and Gun Club hosts Shooting Sports event
The Holley Rod & Gun Club's NRA Family Fun Shooting Sports Event held June 29 was well attended. The club's members wish to express their thanks to the Clarendon Fire Company and their emergency crew for presenting the "ins and outs" of their vehicle to the event attendees. They also wish to thank the two Department of Environmental Conservation officers for their presentations. more
