Life along the Erie Canal
Life along the Erie Canal

My husband Bob and I moved to Spencerport 24 years ago and for the last 21 years we have been fortunate to live along the Erie Canal.

In our neighborhood, (off Big Ridge Road, Spencerport) we have always watched out for each other's children, taken care of our neighbor's homes while they are on vacation, had big neighborhood picnics, and swapped perennials. From early spring till late fall, our children have had the opportunity to fish in the canal, hike the woods that border it and ride their bikes, without having to worry about cars. Over the years we have watched children grow, graduate, go on to college and return with fond memories. Sounds like Mayberry, doesn't it?

Over the years we have been pleased to see the canal path paved and more people taking advantage of such a beautiful area. Canal path usage as well as boat traffic has increased. On a summer day as we sit on our back porch we watch our neighbor's nine year old sheltie greet boaters. Her name is Bonnie and she is the most gentlest of dogs. Bonnie's main enjoyment in life is to sit outside her home with her owners Mike and Sue Ryan, and chase the waves created by the boats. Watching her excitement as she jumps at the waves and barks a friendly greeting to boaters has brought joy to us and smiles to the captains and passengers who happily pass by. So if you see Bonnie as you are walking, biking and boating, give a little whistle and call her name, you will be rewarded with a loud bark and much tail wagging from the welcoming committee of one loving dog named Bonnie.
