Spencerport campus busy with construction

People driving past the vast amounts of dirt and heavy machinery around Spencerport High School and Middle School wonder just what is going on. With the piles of dirt and clouds of dust, it is difficult to imagine the blue prints that must be behind it all.

John Britton, director of facilities for Spencerport Central School District, explains that the building project will take two years. When it is finished, the high school and middle school will each have about 24 new classrooms, and the high school will have a new auditorium, and the middle school, another gym. In addition the high school main office will be moved to where the counseling office presently is, and it will be accessible from both the front and rear of the school.

There will be six practice soccer fields, three softball/baseball fields, two football practice fields and a football stadium. The present soccer stadium will remain as it is.

More staff and student parking for both the high school and middle school, and a parent drop-off zone in the front of the high school will be constructed. The new bus loop will be in the rear of the high school.

In addition, a new elementary school will be built near Bernabi Elementary School. Britton says that when the project is completed, the elementary schools will have grades kindergarten through five, and the middle school will have grades six through eight, making it a true middle school.

While plenty of construction is underway now, the changes that will be finished by this September are mostly internal changes. There will be all new classroom lighting in the high school, middle school and Taylor and Munn Elementary schools. This lighting, according to Britton, will be bright and uniform and will save about ten percent on energy. Also, new boilers/hot water heaters will be installed in the high school, middle school, Taylor and Munn.

The parking at the high school and middle school, as well as the new bus loop should also be completed by September.

"I feel this is extremely positive," Britton says. "Things are on schedule at this time. Of course, some will be down to the wire!"

The Ogden/Spencerport area is one of the fastest growing communities in Monroe County. Britton says that this fall there will be 50 additional students at the middle school and these will be working through the high school in years to come.
