Sporting license procedures changed

2002-2003 sporting licenses can be purchased beginning August 26. The Department of Environmental Conservation will be implementing a new program called DECALS. New computers have been installed in all the town clerk's offices and will be a direct link to the DEC in Albany. Each license agent will be creating a new data bank of information this year. Therefore, past license or proof of a hunter safety certificate are required at the time of purchase of a new license. Documentation of New York residency is also required.

For Deer Management Permits, the process will be done from the computer of the issuing license agent. The DMP will not be issued on a first-come, first served basis. A random selection process will occur at the License Issuing Outlet and, if selected, a hunter will receive the DMP(s) immediately. DMP's must be applied for by October 1, to be included in the initial application period.

Fees for DEC hunting and fishing licenses have increased and there are some new names for the license types. Gone is the Big Game license, replaced by Small & Big Game for $19. A Sportsman license which includes small, big game and fishing, is now $37. A Super Sportsman includes small, big game, fishing, bowhunting, muzzleloading, and a turkey permit and sells for $68 for a $6 savings as all licenses are purchased at once.
