John V. Sally of the John V. Sally Agency, Elmgrove Road, has taken an active part in the Lions Club and their goals in Lionism since become a member several years ago. He has worked as an officer, from vice president to president, to membership chairperson and serving on the board of directors for many years. Sally supported many projects such as the annual geranium sale, sausage roast, winter carnival, casino night and July 4th celebration. more

Hilton Board of Education sets tax levy
At its regular Board Meeting on August 13, the Hilton Board of Education approved the tax levy for the 2002-03 school year to be apportioned between the district's four towns: Parma, Greece, Hamlin and Clarkson. The board approved a levy of $22,196,335 which is unchanged from the amount projected in the budget approved by voters in May. more

Maze opens at Springdale Farm
Springdale Farm, 696 Colby Street in Spencerport, expects to open its Maize Quest Cornfield Maze Saturday, August 31. This year's theme is "Escape from Treasure Island!" The 10-acre cornfield has been carved in the shape of a galleon and treasure box through 300,000 living cornstalks. more

National award winner at North Chili Quilt Show
Arleen Boyd, winner of several national awards for her exquisite quilts, and a very popular teacher, lecturer, and workshop leader locally, will exhibit several of her quilts and teach classes as "Featured Quilter" at the North Chili Quilt Show September 13 and 14. more

The power of the positive
Matt Pagani begins his senior year this September and looks ahead to college. Not unusual events in a young person's life. However, Pagani, 18, of Spencerport, was born with central hypoventilation syndrome, a rare condition in which his brain fails to send the message to breathe when he falls asleep. more

C-C district tax rate calculated
At the August 13 meeting, the Churchville-Chili Board of Education approved a new school tax rate of $24.05 per $1,000 of assessed property value for residents in the towns of Chili, Ogden and Sweden. more

Door-to-door fundraising doesn't support local DARE
Some residents in the South Parma, Ogden-Spencerport area may have been asked for donations to DARE America, says DARE instructor and Ogden Police Officer Steve Brown. He wants anyone asked to be aware that the door-to-door solicitations do not raise money for the local DARE program run by Ogden Police and the Spencerport School Distirct. more

Nominations sought for 17th annual ATHENA® award
Nominations are being accepted for the 17th Annual ATHENA Award, to be presented by the Women's Council of the Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon January 16, 2003. Rochester Amateur Radio Club offers license classes
The Rochester Amateur Radio Association will offer an Amateur (Ham) Radio Course that will teach about Ham radio and enable participants to receive an entry level Ham Radio license. Geared towards youth, but open to all, it will be given at the Monroe County Office Building, 111 Westfall Road, Rochester. The first class will begin Monday, September 9, at 7 p.m. and classes continue for twelve weeks. more

The Clarkson Historical Society is accepting reservations for space rental for the end of the season garage sale and flea market. A space can be rented for $20. The sale will take place Saturday, September 14 at the lodge at Hafner Park, 3623 Lake Road, Clarkson. more

Training for Special Sitters available
Parents of children with developmental disabilities need time away from home as much as anyone, but finding someone to care for their son or daughter can often be a problem. In response to this widely felt need, The Arc of Monroe County has established the Special Sitters Program which educates individuals over the age of 14 in how to care for people with special needs. more

CC school starts school year with new name
At its August 13 meeting, the Churchville-Chili Board of Education passed a resolution renaming the Churchville-Chili Middle School to the Churchville-Chili Intermediate School. This name change will coincide with the opening of the remodeled school for the first day of school on September 4. more

'Chipping in for Career Connections' raises funds for senior program
The Spencerport High School's third annual "Chipping in for Career Connections" Golf Tournament on July 29 raised $2,700, an increase over last year's amount. The money is used to fund the high school's annual career day and scholarships to graduating seniors. more

Holley welcomes new director of instruction/special programs
The Holley Central School District has hired Karri D. Schiavone as director of instruction/special programs. She will replace John Heise, who retired after 21 years with the district. more

Input sought for C-C school chief profile
As the search for a Superintendent of Schools gets underway, the Board of Education for the Churchville-Chili Central School district looks to the community for support and involvement. A Staff and Community Forum will be held on September 5, 2002 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This forum will be held in the Churchville-Chili Intermediate School auditorium located at 139 Fairbanks Road, Churchville. The purpose of this forum is to inform the community as well as staff about the superintendent selection process and assist in developing a profile of the ideal superintendent. more

Record first-day enrollment at GCC
Genesee Community College opened the 2002-2003 academic year with a record first-day enrollment: 3,456 students had enrolled for classes as of August 24, up 8.2 percent from the 3,194 students enrolled a year ago. more

Spencerport Board of Education maps future of district
The Spencerport Board of Education has selected Dr. Stephen Barone, president of Transformation Systems, Ltd., to facilitate the district's strategic planning process during the 2002-03 school year, according to a press release prepared by district personnel. Developing a strategic plan is one of the board's major initiatives for the coming year. more

Spencerport school volunteers invited to information meetings
The Spencerport School District is holding an informational meeting for people interested in volunteering for the 2002-03 school year. The district volunteer program wants people who care about youth, want to be a positive influence, and have a few hours of free time each week or month. more

SUNY Brockport library has new director
Frank M. Wojcik, Ph.D., has been named director of the Drake Memorial Library at the State University of New York at Brockport, according to Timothy J. Flanagan, provost and vice-president of academic affairs. more

Celebrates 91st birthday
Grace (Dunbar) Kagel of Hilton celebrated her 91st birthday August 14, 2002. Grace has been a life long member of the Hilton Community. She is predeceased by her husband, John L. Kagel. The couple was very active in serving the senior citizens of the community by organizing and leading tours. more

Byron-Bergen alumni soccer game set
Byron-Bergen men and women (alumni members only) are invited to play soccer on Saturday, September 28 at the soccer field at the Byron-Bergen High School. Gates open at 4 p.m. with games scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Registration fee of $10 per player. Registrations must be received by September 16. Proceeds benefit all Byron-Bergen sports programs. more

Chili Youth Baseball 9-10 year old
division takes first in his division

The Chili Youth Baseball 9-10 year old division Travel Team finished the season with a 15-2 league record. They took first place in their division and went on to win the Playoff Championship game against Spencerport, 8-2. The team's strong pitching and excellent defense along with timely hitting made the team hard to beat, according to their supporters and coaches. more

Swimmers medalists at Empire Games
The Empire State Games were held in Syracuse, from July 31 to August 4. This was the 25th Anniversary of the games, and, commemorative medals, gold, silver and bronze, were given to the top 3 finishers in each event of the three divisions. Betty Dunn and Irene D'Agostino, both from Brockport, swam in the masters division, for Niagara District. more
