Brockport taking steps to mitigate disasters

Being proactive is the name of the game in warding off disasters, Trustee James Whipple said at the September 3 village board meeting.

Whipple reported that he and Department of Public Works Superintendent Brad Upson had attended a meeting in Monroe County to look at disaster recovery plans and pre-disaster mitigation plans. "We were charged with coming back and identifying potential disasters and to think of ways to prevent them," he said. "There is grant money available to help fix the problems that were identified, before they happen."

The project will be countywide with Brockport providing the piece that pertains to it, Whipple said.

Trustee Norman Knapp said the museum committee was in the information gathering mode for the project to get the museum chartered with the New York State Department of Regents. "Yesterday is already history and we want to preserve our history for the youth," he explained.

Vice Mayor Morton Wexler said there will be buses available on September 11 for college students wishing to travel to the Memorial Monument. The buses will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. He said he wasn’t aware of any ceremonies taking place within the village but expected there would be traffic at the monument on that day.

Fire Department Historian Scott Warthman said there were still 300-400 memorial bricks available for sale for the Memorial Monument. "This monument is going to be a focal point of the village for years to come," he said.

Warthman thanked the trustees, department heads and the community for their support in the construction and dedication of the monument. Ceremonies were held August 18.
