Neighborhood Watch program

Residents of the South Avenue and Holley Street areas are putting their heads together to formulate a Neighborhood Watch program.

Brockport Police Chief Dan Varrenti said at the September 3 village board meeting that the talks are in the "crawling stages" at this point. "I’ve been invited to a picnic where I can discuss the formation of a neighborhood watch type team," he said. "It’s something I want to explore with the residents."

Varrenti said he commended the residents for taking an active interest in improving their neighborhoods.

Vice Mayor Morton Wexler commended Varrenti and his officers for their quick response to solving the rape that occurred in the village three weeks ago. "At a meeting with individuals from the college, they said they were elated with the quick arrest of the suspect," Wexler said. "Parents of incoming students were concerned for the welfare of their daughters … I extend my congratulations to the officers."

Fire Chief Greg Wing reported that his crews have responded to 768 fire and 1,041 ambulance calls as of September 3. "We’re pushing the limits in the number of calls we’ve responded to this year," he said. "The average time on a call is two hours … we had 10 accidents and calls today alone."

Wing also reported that the department is in the process of training one of the largest classes of recruits.

The chief urged residents and travelers to exercise caution when driving. "We’ve had so many accidents where we are pulling people out of cars," he said. "It’s very stressful for everyone … I wish people would just be more cautious and pay more attention to the roads."
