Walkable Communities workshop sponsored by GTC

The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is sponsoring an evening workshop on "Walkable Communities" with nationally recognized pedestrian specialist, Dan Burden, on Tuesday, September 17, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Rochester.

The evening workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. is designed to give the participant an overview of what walkable communities are and how to create them. This session is geared toward anyone interested in improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and mobility in their community - public officials, planning board members, citizens, developers, business owners, planners, designers, public health practitioners. This workshop is free and no registration is required.

Dan Burden is the founder and director of Walkable Communities, Inc., a non-profit corporation organized for the purpose of helping communities become more pedestrian friendly. As director of Walkable Communities, Inc., Burden has examined walking and bicycling conditions in more than 500 cities in the United States and abroad. He has also developed traffic calming programs in over 30 U.S. communities and was the principal author of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning and Design curriculum now being used at many colleges and universities.

The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the nine county Genesee-Finger Lakes region. The United States Department of Transportation requires every metropolitan area with a population over 50,000 to have a designated MPO to qualify for receipt of federal highway and transit funds. The GTC is the MPO for the nine county Genesee-Finger Lakes region, which includes the following counties: Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.
