Hemlock trees at risk due to invasion of exotic pest
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Erin M. Crotty and State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers have called for residents of Monroe County to watch for an exotic tree pest that has infested a new area of New York state. more

Historic Bergen Homestead sold at auction
One could imagine that the Bible that Eunice Wilcox Ely now owns has witnessed it all - the travels, the hard work, the marriages, births and deaths that make up the story of a family. That Bible, along with lots of other household items, tools, furnishings, knick knacks and even the historic Bergen home, barns and outbuildings that held them all, was auctioned in late August. more

State takes steps to help New Yorkers recover
Governor George E. Pataki recently launched the second phase of New York State's Hope & Recovery campaign, a statewide outreach effort to ensure that those severely affected by the tragic events of September 11 receive the support and counseling they need for alcohol and drug abuse. more

Benefit planned for Hilton family
The MOMS Club of Hilton and Parma Free Methodist Church are co-sponsoring the "Friends of the Bakers" benefit dinner and auction. The Baker family of Hilton lost their husband/father in March to a bacterial infection. The surviving mom is 30 years old and has four children under the age of eight. more

Canal Corporation announces sweepstakes winners
The New York State Canal Corporation announced the prize winners of the five-week "Unlock the Adventure" radio campaign designed to inform the public about the Canal System and to promote tourism within New York state. more

Chili broadcasts monthly community report
The Town of Chili will be broadcasting a report to the community on cable Channel 12 on Monday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. more

Duck calling contest to be held
This year's NYS Championship Duck Calling Contest is Saturday, September 28 at the National Hunting and Fishing Day festival located at the NYSDEC headquarters in Avon (Route 5/20, half way between East Avon and Lima). The contest will start at 1 p.m. with registration beginning at 10 a.m. All callers will report by 12:30 p.m. more

Orleans United Way/Red Cross campaign annual appeal under way
Eastern Orleans' annual United Way/Red Cross campaign began September 10. Volunteers announced a goal of $155,000 to help meet the community's critical needs. The dollars raised through the annual appeal directly benefit the services and programs offered by 11 local health and human service organizations in Orleans County. Individuals and families throughout Orleans County receive Red Cross assistance through disaster relief, counseling, blood services, and health and safety training programs. more

RPO opening night celebration
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off the 2002-2003 season with an Opening Night Celebration at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 28, in the Eastman Theatre. Run for the apples
Hilton-Parma Recreation is preparing for the 24th Annual Apple Derby/Merkel 5-Mile Run scheduled for Saturday morning, October 5. The traditional certified course, which begins at the high school and finishes at Canning Street Square, will be utilized; and this year, seven male and female champion categories have been established. Similar to past races, all runners will receive the specially designed Apple Derby Run shirt and a winners cup which depicts all the past champions and their times. more

Run, Walk or Bike to benefit Habitat for Humanity
Twelve churches in the Greece area have formed a coalition to sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity house at 27 Rauber Street in the city of Rochester. The September 28 Run, Walk, or Bike event will raise funds to be used in the building of this house. more

Thruway motorists save $8 million in fuel costs
Governor George E. Pataki announced that the 5-cents per gallon reduction in fuel prices put into effect at all Thruway Travel Centers saved motorists more than $8 million in fuel costs over the last two years, according to the latest financial data. more

Assemblymember John helps secure funds for Rochester Fast Ferry
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester) announced that she fought for and secured $14 million in state loans and grants to jumpstart the Rochester Fast Ferry. The funding package includes a 20-year, $6.6 million State Infrastructure loan and a $7.4 million grant. more

Susan John secures funding for Rape Crisis Service
Assemblymember Susan John has secured over $49,000 in funding to prevent the curtailment of services offered by the Rape Crisis Service (RCS) of Planned Parenthood. "The Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood has been steadfast in their commitment to preventing sexual assault and providing services to sexual assault survivors," John said. "With this funding, the center will continue to offer vital services rape victims and their families need to recover and maintain stability in their lives." more

Spencerport High School business teacher Mike Blackwell signs the American Cancer Society bus. The shrink-wrapped bus began a national tour in the spring. On September 18-19, it will be in Washington, D.C., for the ACS Celebration on the Hill. more

Empire State College holds information sessions
Empire State College, of the State University of New York, will hold a public information session about its FORUM Management Education program on Thursday, September 19 at noon and Monday, September 23 at 6 p.m. at the college's Genesee Valley Center, 1475 Winton Road North, Rochester. principal retires after 28 years
William Pileggi has seen a complete changeover of administration, the opening of a new junior/senior high school and the creation of vice principal positions at both the elementary and high schools during his 28 years with the Holley Central School District. Now, after nearly three decades, Pileggi has retired from his position as principal of Holley Middle School/High School and is serving as interim principal until his replacement is found. more

MCC dedicates Remembrance Walk
Local business and civic leaders joined Monroe Community College to dedicate the September 11 Remembrance Walk on the college's Brighton Campus on Wednesday, September 11. The memorial honors the thousands of victims who perished in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania during last year's terrorist attacks. more

New SUNY Brockport MetroCenter opening
SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King will join SUNY College at Brockport President Paul Yu to officially open the SUNY Brockport MetroCenter, Tuesday, September 17, at 11:30 a.m., at 55 St. Paul Street. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the building will be open for tours. In addition, a business networking fair will be held on site, 1-3 p.m. more

NTID awarded grant
The National Science Foundation has awarded the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology a $780,000 grant to examine factors influencing the access to science, technical, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education by deaf and hard-of-hearing people more

The Athenaeum, the innovative, educational organization for adults over 50 at Rochester Institute of Technology, offers a weeklong open house from September 23-26 during the first week of scheduled classes.
