Duck calling contest to be held

This year's NYS Championship Duck Calling Contest is Saturday, September 28 at the National Hunting and Fishing Day festival located at the NYSDEC headquarters in Avon (Route 5/20, half way between East Avon and Lima). The contest will start at 1 p.m. with registration beginning at 10 a.m. All callers will report by 12:30 p.m.

The winner of this year's NYS Duck Calling Championship will receive the New York state title for the year. They will also receive a trip to Stuttgart, Arkansas to the world's greatest calling contest, the 2002 World's Championship Duck Calling Contest, held on Thanksgiving weekend. The trip includes roundtrip air transportation and hotel accommodations.

Contestants will be required to perform a hail (or long distance) call, mating (or lonesome hen) call, feed (or chatter) call, and a comeback call all within 90 seconds. All Worlds' Duck Calling Contest rules will apply. To get a copy of the rules call 1-800-810-2241.

Adults who enter the contest are required to present identification providing NY state residency. Residency requirements will need to be met before drawing for the order of calling. The cost of the contest is $20, payable to Marty's Trading Company, sponsor of this year's contest.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the contest, particularly a video person, contest runner and timer.
