Susan John secures funding for Rape Crisis Service

Assemblymember Susan John has secured over $49,000 in funding to prevent the curtailment of services offered by the Rape Crisis Service (RCS) of Planned Parenthood. "The Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood has been steadfast in their commitment to preventing sexual assault and providing services to sexual assault survivors," John said. "With this funding, the center will continue to offer vital services rape victims and their families need to recover and maintain stability in their lives."

The Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood was one of the organizations facing cuts in County Executive Jack Doyle's recent budget cuts. The proposed Monroe County Budget 2003 program reductions include eliminating funding for RCS, which would have effectively crippled the program.

John noted that RCS offers free counseling 24 hours a day, seven days a week - as well as legal and medical assistance. The funding includes $9,880 to finish out 2002 ad $39,519 to ensure services throughout 2003. "Regionally in 2001, over 1,000 people were provided counseling services related to the rape or sexual assault of themselves or a loved one," John continued. "This represents hundreds of families who found a place to turn to when confronted with one of the most violent acts imaginable."

"Without these funds, the Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood would not be able to provide these critical services for this community ... . A rape or sexual assault survivor will not have to wonder whether or not there will be someone to answer the phone at three in the morning. She or he will not have to wonder if someone will be available to meet them at the hospital emergency room," said Anna Potter, manager of Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood. "Thanks to Susan John and our dedicated volunteers, we will be able to celebrate our 30th anniversary next year with a renewed sense of determination."

Carol Love, president/CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region added, "We are most grateful for Assemblymember John's work to procure funding so that we can continue our successful record in providing this critical service to Monroe County. This contingency funding will get us through 2003, but county leaders need to find a permanent home for Rape Crisis Service in future county budgets. Our community deserves nothing less."

"Slashing services would have been a tremendous disservice to the countless women who have already gone through so much," John concluded. "By keeping RCS fully operational, we ensure victims aren't left behind during a very traumatic time in their lives."
