Local Girl Scout
receives Gold Award

Lani Toyama, a member of Girl Scout Troop 637, has received her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. She was presented her awards at the Gold Award Banquet on June 9 and was also honored at the Celebration of Achievement in Rochester on June 23. To earn the award, a girl must complete the GS Challenge, Career Exploration Pin, Leadership Award, and interest project patches. Her final task is to implement a project of at least 50 hours of work. For this, Toyama made a video entitled "It's Up to You." She wrote, directed and produced the film about making good decisions showing teenagers in three scenarios with both right and wrong endings and a discussion. The video is aimed for pre- and young teens and she has distributed it to health care facilities, school and church youth programs. A copy of the video is also available in the library at the Girl Scout Program Center at 1020 John Street in Henrietta. The Churchville-Chili Senior High School graduate (2002) is a freshman at Ithaca College pursuing a bachelor of music degree with a major in vocal performance. She is the daughter of Thomas and Cheryl Toyama of Ridgefield Drive, Churchville.
