Cadets nearing end of first varsity year

The Hilton Cadets girl’s field hockey team is in its first year competing at the varsity level. Their record, after a 4-0 loss to Eastridge October 7, is 0-9-1. The tie was a 0-0 game against Webster Thomas. They have yet to score their first goal. It’s the equivalent of an expansion team in any sport but, according to first year varsity head coach Brenda Mashiotta, you would be hard pressed to see any depressed players in the locker room.

"You would think we had just won a championship with the way these girls are. They are just as enthused, they don’t get down on themselves and they realize that this is a building process that they are a part of.

Junior goalie Megan Coltoniak kept the Eastridge game relatively close with five kick saves on shots from in close, including two in the last minute of the first half.

"Megan is our rock - she’s a great goalie and we usually play solid defense in front of her. It’s been tough on these players because I’m their third head coach in three years and all of us have had our different way of doing things. But, we’re only losing six seniors and they come from all areas on the field. We don’t have years of tradition and building like the schools on the east side of the county, but we’re starting and I can’t be prouder of the way this team has conducted itself."
