Eagles' Williams nets pair in tie

Junior Donald Williams scored a goal in each period for Kendall in the 2-2 tie with Holley in boy’s soccer October 3.

Leading 1-0 at halftime on Williams' first goal off a Torry Tooley pass, Kendall defense couldn’t clear a long direct kick in the box allowing Holley’s Bryan Beckingham to tie the game 1-1 early in the second half.

The two teams battled for the next 34 minutes scoreless, but with numerous chances for both. Hawks goalkeeper Chris Weber made a diving stop on Williams just minutes after Holley tied the game. The Hawks had three chances of their own with Matt Nelson and Nick Valente having shots stopped. With eight minutes to play in the game, Nate Boyd put a perfect drop pass on the foot of Scott Cavanaugh who rocketed a shot off the crossbar.

Kendall took a 2-1 lead with just five minutes left when the Holley goalkeeper stepped out of the box with the ball setting up a direct kick, which Williams converted on putting it past the wall and high in the left corner.

The Hawks could not be denied however. With just 2:19 left to play, a direct kick found Cavanaugh in the box. He took two strides to his right and let go a low shot that found the net for the 2-2 tie.

"I’m just glad that we didn’t hang our heads and were able to come back after the way we played earlier this week against Wheatland-Chili," said Holley head coach Dan Orbaker after the game. "We came out flat in the first half and I think everyone heard me at halftime. To come back like that after being scored on late in the game was a good sign though."

Kendall coach Gary Pollock was disappointed with the late goal against, but glad to gain a tie. "We did some good things out there tonight especially in the first half. Anytime you come out with a tie against the better teams in our league, though you’d rather have the win, it’s not a bad thing."
