Canal trail upgrades underway

Part of Governor Pataki's $50 million in canal revitalization money is being put to work in the village of Brockport.

In a project that started in September, upgrades, rebuilding, and in some cases complete construction of trails alongside the Erie Canal are being undertaken, NYS Canal Corporation spokesman Terry O'Brien said. "This part of the project involves more than 18 miles of trail," he said. "Right now we are working on sections from Gallup Road westward toward Smith Street." Work includes paving with stone dust and landscaping.

The project, he said, is scheduled for completion in November. As part of Pataki's revitalization project, trailways along the Erie Canal will increase from the approximately 237 miles in place right now to more than 348 when the construction is complete. "We are looking to make the Canal Way Trail one of the longest trails in New York state," O'Brien said.
