Pennies add up - students purchase memorial bricks

It was an unusual bank deposit - 30,000 pennies. Brockport's Fire Chief Gregory Wing reported that 257 students from Barclay Middle School collected the 30,000 pennies and donated them to the Memorial Monument.

Their collection, $300, earned them the right to purchase three bricks on the walkway, he said. Wing visited the school to talk with the students and thanked them for their donation, he said.

He reported that Fire Prevention Week activities were underway in all of the schools. "We get a lot of recruits and Explorers who tell us that the reason they wanted to grow up and join the fire department was because of our visits during Fire Prevention Week," he said. "Our work is paying off."

Wing was commended by the board for the work he and his staff do.
