Black Belt tests at Gillam Grant (Collamer-Jones) Karate

Sensei(s) Jim Snow, William Leonard and Rick Hawley were promoted to Go-Dan (fifth degree black belt) in Isshin Ryu Karate by Shihan Cyndy Jones on behalf of Master Kichiro Shimabuku of Okinawa. All have been training since the late 1980s as part of the Kodak (Rochester), Gillam Grant (Bergen) or Collamer-Jones (Byron) Karate programs. Sensei Rick Hawley teaches the Saturday children's karate program at the Byron-Bergen Elementary School. Sensei Snow and Sensei Leonard run karate programs in Fairport and Brockport, respectively.

Sensei Pam O'Brien was promoted to Yon-Dan, 4th degree black belt. Sensei(s) Chris Hill, Dave Nagel, Dave Riedel and Jim Suter were promoted to San-Dan (third degree black belt).

Sho-Dan (1st degree) promotions were awarded to Mike Starowitz, Mike Mattern, Jamie Oliver and Andrew Lapietra along with the title of Sensei (teacher). Candace Sanders was promoted to Sempai-Brown belt.

Many of these black belts will take part in a karate demonstration as part of Santa's Workshop at the Gillam Grant Center in Bergen on December 7.
