Board commends Joint Recreation Commission members

Six members of the soon-to-be-disbanded Joint Recreation Commission were recognized by Brockport Village Board officials at the December 16 meeting.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Neal Kemp, Diane Wexler, Scott Fake, Jarl Boyst, Lynwood Vandenburg and Jim Whipple for their service to the community while serving on the commission. Fake, who was not a village resident, served on the 40-year old commission for more than 26 years and was the director.

Trustee Norman Knapp said he didn’t remember seeing any formal information on the dissolution of the commission. "I’m definitely not in favor of dissolving a commission that worked so well for so many years," he said. "I know it’s a moot point, but I’m against it."

Morton Wexler, trustee, said he had hoped things would end in a better manner than they did. The commission was disbanded when the towns of Sweden and Clarkson put the new community center together.

Saying there were cash and assets left from the JRC, Trustee James Whipple said there would be liquidation and that Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester would be asked for a breakdown of any money following the liquidation.

In other matters, the board heard from Marc and Jon Marcello, owners of the former Village Pantry. They were addressing the board because of confusion that had arisen from their proposed name change of the business. The restaurant, which is located at 58 North Main Street, is looking to change its name to 58 Main.

"It’s confusing - two businesses with the same address. I understand it’s your new handle, but it is confusing," Whipple said, referring to an attorney's office that is located at 58 Main Street, within the village limits.

Building and Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff said the name change could certainly cause confusion with commuter traffic.

As long as the common name and place indicator was correct for dispatching purposes, Fire Chief Greg Wing said he had no problem with the proposed name change for the restaurant.
