Saints give up late goal in loss

Bishop Kearney/Eastridge’s Steve Doell scored with just 1:33 left in the game to break a 1-1 tie and give the Kings a 2-1 victory over Churchville-Chili in high school hockey December 14.

Kevin Johnson scored the only goal of the first period for Bishop Kearney before the Saints Phil Gurbacki scored an unassisted goal in the first minute of the third period to tie the game. He was able to jam in the puck short side past Kings goal tender Phil Montgomery. It remained that way until the Doell goal.

The Saints had several chances earlier in the game, including two on the power play late in the second period by Gurbacki and Jay Kiem, but failed to convert. Goaltender Jeremy Rossignolo stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced.

Bishop Kearney head coach Chuck Dossier said, "We saw some video and thought their defensemen would have trouble if we pressured them in their own end. They weren’t able to break out with our forecheck."

The Saints fall to 1-3-2 with the loss.
