DEC seeks public input on the future of Lake Ontario fisheries
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will hold a series of public meetings in January and February 2003 to obtain comments on the Lake Ontario fishery that will help the agency develop new fish community objectives. Fish community objectives are broad-based goals that will guide DEC and Province of Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in managing Lake Ontario fisheries. more

Genealogy Sunday scheduled at Ogden Library
The first Genealogy Sunday program in the 2003 series is scheduled for January 19 at the Ogden Farmers' Library from noon to 4 p.m. The library will be open during that time for people who are doing genealogy and historical research. more

Hamlin creates new tower law
A year ago, this wouldn’t have been Austin Warner’s favorite topic. Now, however, Hamlin’s supervisor can’t suppress a faint grin when he talks about the recent passing of a new law that will regulate any telecommunication facilities that enter the town. The 26-page document is described by its authors as "extremely thorough" in nature and will make it difficult for any towers over 199 feet to be built. more

Local high school student to attend Presidential Classroom in D.C.
Nikki Torcello, a student at Churchville-Chili High School, will attend the Presidential Classroom Media & Democracy Program, March 8-15, in Washington, D.C. Presidential Classroom (PC), the leader in civic education, provides the best and brightest high school juniors and seniors unprecedented access to the leaders who shape America's public policy. more

Orleans Red Cross handles disaster calls
The Disaster Action Team in Orleans County handled eight calls between July 1 and the end of 2002, an above average number for the county. Immediate needs were provided to 21 adults and 10 children. The aid was made possible through donations from the local community. more

Property clean up begun in Brockport neighborhood
Access into the former Kleen Brite property on Fair Street in Brockport was obtained following reports by police that doors at the property were open and a car was in the parking lot. Brockport’s Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff said he was called in to assist police when they discovered someone was in the vacant property. more

South Avenue, Brockport, property inspection scheduled
Ongoing problems at a four family dwelling located at 34 South Avenue in the village of Brockport will likely be wrapped up on January 10, Brockport’s Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff said. more

Village officials pleased with resolution of 3M issue
Nearly two years after taking a very proactive stance on the clean-up of contaminants in the Village of Brockport, village officials are pleased to learn of the resolution of a law suit between 3M Corporation and attorneys representing affected village residents. It is seen as another important step toward bringing the issue to a close. more

300 quilts sewn for at-risk children
Thanks to the gifts of time, talent, fabrics, and money, the ABC Quilts Ministry sponsored by the United Methodist Church of North Chili collected and distributed over 300 baby quilts to at-risk children in 2002. Most are used for Strong Hospital programs, and some extras went to New York City for HIV-positive babies, where the need is greatest. more

Girl Scouts make hats for cancer patients
Junior Girl Scout Troop 944 of Spencerport undertook the construction of fleece hats for cancer patients. In December, 10 scouts, with the assistance of leaders Sherie Connors and Heather Evans and two mothers, machine sewed 47 cancer caps. more

Lakeside welcomes first baby born in 2003
Lakeside welcomed Jose Carlos Hernandez-Saucedo, the first baby born at Lakeside Memorial Hospital in 2003. He arrived at 3:05 a.m. on January 3, weighed 7 lbs. 11 ozs. and was 21 inches long. more

Pre-school music program offered
Hilton-Parma Recreation is now handling registration for the pre-school program, Fun with Music, coordinated by Patty Gorman. Fun with Music will teach participants to sing well-known songs as a group, teach rhythm instruments, body movements, and basic music theory. more

In Schools:

B-B district to hold budget input session
Byron-Bergen will hold a session for district residents to provide input on the matters regarding the 2003-2004 school budget. The session will take place in the High School Library on Thursday, January 16, at 7 p.m. and will be hosted by Dr. Gregory Geer, superintendent of schools.

Brockport High School exam schedule changed
Due to a change in the Brockport High School Regents exam schedule, only high school students who are scheduled for exams on Monday, January 27 should report to school. more

C-C sets 2003 kindergarten registration dates
The Churchville-Chili School District has set the dates for its kindergarten registration. All residents will be registering their incoming kindergarten children at the district's Central Office, 139 Fairbanks Road. Parents will receive packets in the mail. Those who do not receive a packet but think that they should, can call 293-1800, extension 2041. Registration will not be accepted at any of the C-C elementary schools. more

Driver Education classes to be offered in Spencerport
There will be a meeting of parents and students who wish to be enrolled in the Spring Driver Education class. The meeting will be held Wednesday, January 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Board of Education meeting room in the Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport. A representative from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will present a one-hour parent and student seminar in the Kendall High School Library on Thursday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. Topics discussed will include the risks involved in "surfing the Web," and strategies and rules to stay safe online. Statewide student financial aid day is Feb. 1
SUNY College at Brockport will be hosting a day-long financial aid workshop for prospective students and their families, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, February 1. The workshop is designed to answer questions and provide assistance regarding financial aid applications, types of aid available and the award process. These workshops are also being held at many other State University of New York institutions across the state. more

Chili Senior Center programs and events set
Pace Exercise Class - Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The class offers easy exercises for men and women with arthritis or limited range of motion. Most exercises are done sitting in a chair. The class is instructed by the Arthritis Foundation. $12 for six week pass (or $6 with Preferred Care or Blue Choice). For information, contact the center at 889-6185. more

The Hilton Cadets gymnastics team improved their record to 6-0 this season with a 130.725-115.550 win over Churchville-Chili January 7 at SUNY Brockport. Rush-Henrietta and Honeoye Falls-Lima also competed and finished third and fourth respectively. more

Fairport pulls away from Blue Devils
Fairport outscored Brockport 14-4 in the deciding third quarter and went on to defeat the Blue Devils 48-32 in boy’s basketball January 6. more

Spencerport teams raise funds for cancer group
Approximately $3,000 was donated to the American Cancer Society by the Spencerport Boys' and Girls' basketball programs. The donation represents the net proceeds of Spencerport's Coaches vs Cancer Christmas Classic basketball tournament at Nazareth College and the "Coach Chow" Girls Basketball Tournament both held last December 27 and 28. more

SUNY Brockport wrestling remains second in nation
The SUNY Brockport wrestling team remains ranked second in the Brute/Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Rankings. The new rankings were released last week, the first rankings since December 10. more
