Spencerport teams raise funds for cancer group

Approximately $3,000 was donated to the American Cancer Society by the Spencerport Boys' and Girls' basketball programs. The donation represents the net proceeds of Spencerport's Coaches vs Cancer Christmas Classic basketball tournament at Nazareth College and the "Coach Chow" Girls Basketball Tournament both held last December 27 and 28.

The tournaments are sponsored by Wendy's Restaurant of Rochester, the American Cancer Society and Spencerport Central Schools. At a pre-game ceremony on Tuesday, February 4, (7:45 p.m.), a check will be presented to the American Cancer Society in the name of Spencerport's long time successful and popular girls basketball coach, Don Wierzchowski, who died from pancreatic cancer in May 2002, as well as during the Hilton vs Spencerport girls' basketball game and again on Friday, February 7 and at the Spencerport boys' game vs. Brighton. The 6 year total of donations is now at approximately $28,000.

The Coaches vs Cancer tournament is organized and administered entirely by the Spencerport boys' and girls' basketball program coaching staff and players, as part of its on-going volunteer community service commitment to the Spencerport Student-Athlete Care Program.
