Spencerport School Board
begins 2003-04 budget development

The Spencerport School Board began reviewing each section of the budget as part of the development of the 2003-04 budget proposal at the January 28 board meeting. In developing the proposal, the board will take into account the recommendations of the Budget Advisory Committee, which consists of community residents and district employees, according to school officials.

There are several significant issues that will impact the budget development process this year. The capital project is a main one. In September, the district will open the new elementary school and sixth-graders will for the first time attend the middle school. Many teachers and other staff will be shifted from one school to another. However, some new faculty and staff will need to be hired. Plus, the district has more building and grounds space to care for; the square footage of the district is increasing by about one third.

The school board schedule for reviewing sections of the budget is as follows:

  • February 11 - Transportation and facilities
  • February 25 - Curriculum Development, Staff Development, Continuing Education, Instructional Media, Computer Assisted Instruction, Interscholastic Athletics
  • March 11 - High School, Middle School and Elementary Schools, Students with Disabilities and Student Services, BOCES Services
  • March 25 - Revenue and Property Tax Projections, Adoption of Budget Proposal
  • May 2 - Copies of the budget available in each school and the district office
  • May 13 - Budget Hearing and Information Meeting: school board candidates and proposed budget

The budget vote takes place on May 20 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be three voting locations: the Spencerport Administration Building; Munn Elementary School and Taylor Elementary School.

In addition, there will be two board seats open. Lawrence Fenity and Diana Powell-Keery's terms expire on June 30. Those interested in running for election to the Spencerport School Board must have petitions filled out. Petitions may be obtained at the Administration Building from the District Clerk of the Board. The deadline to receive petitions for school board nominees is 4 p.m., April 18.

District officials invite public input.
