Brockport makes the switch to 911
As of March 3, residents of Brockport will be asked to dial 911 when they have an emergency. "911 is designed for police, fire and ambulance calls," Mayor Josephine Matela said. "Our switching to 911 for police calls will afford the police department with the latest technology and updates." more

Celebrating the birth of the National Wildlife Refuge System
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service invites the public to be a part of history by attending the ceremony to: "Seal The Time Capsule Celebrating A Century of Conservation" on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Headquarters, 1101 Casey Road, Alabama, NY. more

Conference aims to lead minority students toward teaching
More than 400 high schoolers, mostly minorities, are expected March 18 on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College, where they will contemplate furthering their education as teachers. more

Cross-state bicycle tour along Erie Canal offered
The fifth annual Cycling the Erie Canal event - an eight-day, 400-mile, recreational bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany along the historic, scenic, and still-active Erie Canal is scheduled for July 6 to 13. About half of the ride is off-road, on the traffic-free Canalway Trail. The rest is on rural roads with good shoulders. The tour is limited to 400 riders. more

Educational foundation sponsors B-B Alumni Hall of Fame
The Byron-Bergen Educational Foundation (B.B.E.F.) is sponsoring a new initiative to provide students with positive role models and to challenge their imaginations. Beginning this year and becoming an annual event, the Foundation will sponsor an Alumni Hall of Fame which will recognize the accomplishments of graduates of the Byron-Bergen School District or its component schools before consolidation. more

Former Bills coach is keynote speaker at housing fundraiser
Sheen Housing will hold its Building Hope Together Gala Dinner Celebration on Saturday, March 22. Proceeds from the gala will benefit Sheen Housing's Emergency Home Repair Program. more

Homearama comes to Chili
Homearama 2003, featuring 11 spacious homes built largely by westside companies, will be in the Park Place Community on Union Street in Chili, across from the main entrance to Black Creek Park on Route 259. If the winter weather breaks soon and construction can begin in earnest, the show will run from June 14 to June 29. more

Notes from the past … Ogden/ Spencerport
Today, an electric substation sits where the trolley station once stood and the only reminder of the tracks can be seen if you look closely at the pavement on West Avenue. But, if you close your eyes you can almost hear the wheels of the trolley and the warning bell as you stand at West Avenue and Union Street in Spencerport. more

On South Union, next to Taylor’s Honda parlor, is a brick-fronted building. It’s a veterinary hospital. The parking lot is full of creatures -- mostly cats and dogs. In the waiting room hangs a credential: “George McKinney Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,” and farther back somewhere is Doc himself, busy attending to whiskery patients. more

Correction
In the February 24 issue of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, the number of total square feet of the proposed Ogden highway facility was incorrect. The article stated that the entire facility would be 7,100 square feet. more

Ogden town board appoints constable
The Ogden Town Board appointed Arthur Gary Zimmer constable for the Town of Ogden at their meeting, February 26. The appointment is effective immediately. The constable is responsible for serving papers when a judgment is rendered in small claims court. Through court action, clients may be referred to him. more

Orleans County American Legion offers nursing scholarship
The Orleans County American Legion is offering a nursing scholarship to an Orleans County resident who will graduate from high school in June 2003. Applications are now available in your school counselor's office in the following school districts: Albion, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville and Medina. more

CC students receive Advanced Placement Scholar Awards
Advanced Placement (AP) program students at Churchville-Chili High School were recognized for demonstrating college-level achievement through their AP courses and exams. These students received an award certificate from the College Board and their achievement was acknowledged on any grade report that was sent to colleges in the fall. more

Churchville-Chili students qualify for scholarships
Twenty-four Churchville-Chili high school seniors qualified as candidates for the 2003 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. This federally funded scholarship will be awarded to at least 410 seniors throughout New York state and one scholarship per county is allocated. Each scholarship grants $1,500 for the first year of college and is renewable for up to four years. more

Chili Senior Center programs
Arthritis self-help course - a three-week program to help people with arthritis learn ways to take control of their illness on Tuesdays, April 29 - May 13 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Free course instructed by the Arthritis Foundation and topics will include: exercise, pain management, diet, communicating with health care provider, relaxation and stress management. Participants must commit to all three weeks. To register, call 889-6185. more

EPIC plan offers prescription coverage for seniors
The New York State Department of Health offers a prescription protection plan for seniors that covers prescriptions at a low cost called EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage). Legislation increased the income limits, lowered co-pays and introduced a new deductible plan for higher income seniors in January 2001. more

Blue Devils win second straight title
Craig Willis pumped in a shorthanded goal midway through the third period to lead the Brockport Blue Devils to a 2-1 victory over the Greece Thunder and their second consecutive Section Five Division I High School Hockey Championship. more

Golden Eagles win at Ithaca
The SUNY Brockport gymnastics team broke the school's team record for the fourth time this season with 183.125 points and a first place finish at the Harriet Marranca Memorial Invitational at Ithaca College, February 22. Host Ithaca came in second with 183.000 points. Cortland was third with 180.075, followed by Rhode Island (178.900) and Wilson (171.375). more

Hilton Lady Cadets upset #1 seed Canandaigua
On Saturday, February 22, the Hilton Lady Cadets (12-9) traveled to Victor High School for a rematch of last year's Class A Semifinal game against #1 seed Canandaigua (18-3). Everything was pretty much the same as the year before. Canandaigua #1 and apparently rolling to another final and Hilton entering the game as the #5 seed. This year's match up, however, would have a significantly different outcome. more

Ranger netters make it to semi's
"We started rough with three losses, but the girls turned it around to win three of the next four matches," said head coach Mike Zeman in describing the Spencerport Rangers Girls Volleyball season. "I was impressed how they handled the early part of the season as a team." more

Saints fight to finish
Everyone in Churchville was looking forward to the 2002-03 girl's basketball season in October. The 2002 Most Valuable Player, Joanna Patalano, and two other members of the 2002 all-star team (Kelly Monahan and Katie Sullivan) returned from last season's sectional championship team. Add in Coach of the Year Ryan Raftery and expectations were high. more

SUNY Brockport women's basketball loses in close match
The Geneseo Blue Knights defeated the SUNY Brockport Women's basketball team 63-53 in the team's third meeting of the season. This was the final game of the regular season for both teams. With the win, Geneseo improved to 19-6, 15-1 in the SUNYAC, while Brockport falls to 18-7, 12-4 in the conference. more
