Carbon monoxide alarms required in New York State
At least eleven people have died in the State of New York since October due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. On March 6 a new law requiring carbon monoxide (CO) alarms becomes effective in terms of the rules and regulations established by the New York State Building Council. The law requires at least one alarm be installed in all one- and two-family homes, co-ops and condominiums that are built or sold in New York state after March 6. more

Community economic summit planned
County Executive Jack Doyle announced plans to host the 2nd Annual Community Economic Summit that will focus on applying innovative techniques to economic development challenges facing the community. more

Competition for two vacant seats in Holley elections
Voters in the Village of Holley will have two new candidates and two familiar ones from which to choose. more

Country Neighbors Quilt Guild
supports Lakeside Health System

The Country Neighbors Quilt Guild, located in Holley, has donated over 40 rag dolls to Lakeside Health System. The dolls are outfitted in matching patient gowns and caps and will be distributed to pediatric patients in the Emergency Department and Same Day Surgery. Several of the dolls are dressed in outfits celebrating the different seasons and holidays. more

Ford Friendship Express applications
available to area not-for-profit organizations

The Rochester area Ford Dealers offer organizations looking for help in meeting their transportation needs to apply to the 2003 Ford Friendship Express program. Started locally in 2001, the Ford Friendship Express program accepts applications from not-for-profit organizations located in the counties of Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Yates and Wayne. Application deadline is April 30, and van recipients will be notified in the summer 2003. more

The Ogden Farmers' Library recently received three major donations of materials from area residents. more

Proposed Orleans landfill expansion under study
Town of Albion residents may once again be faced with an operational landfill within their town's limits. Waste Management of New York has recently received approval from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to expand the existing Orleans Sanitary Landfill and begin operations. more

Proposed rehab of Ingersoll Street Bridge
in Albion village to be presented

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is in the process of developing design studies for the rehabilitation of the Ingersoll Road Lift Bridge in the Village of Albion. NYSDOT will host a public information meeting to update the community on the project plans and to solicit input and comments. more

Coincidentally with your fine tribute to Doctor McKinney I am sorting through old photographs of our family and farm. One picture happens to include two of Doc’s larger animal patients. Doc treated our team of draft horses and the three or four cows we usually had, all during the years he cared for large animals. more

According to Susan Salvaggio, principal of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, two C-C senior students are named finalists in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP). These students are Kellie French and Jordan Hicks. more

C-C students prove science skills
A team of thirteen Churchville-Chili (C-C) Junior High School students competed in the regional Science Olympiad at St. John Fisher College on February 8. Students Ryan Burakowski, Nicole Campbell, Marc Hartwig, Cody Hewitt, Brian Kelvie, Kristy Klein, Julie Leyland, Jessica Mix, Colin Noble, Amanda Padgett, Julie Presler, James Williamson, Matt Lengen and Andrea Morabito represented C-C Junior High School. more

Hilton Schools seek nominations for 2004 Teacher of the Year
The Hilton Central School District is currently seeking nominations for the 2004 Teacher of the Year, an annual award sponsored by the Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association. This year's Teacher of the Year, High School Social Studies teacher Chuck Partridge, was named in early September. more

An enthusiastic crowd supporting Hilton's 2003 Quest School Sled Race. Parents and teachers added to the cheers for the contestants. This was the ninth year of the popular contest and the weather February 26 was perfect for outdoor racing and watching. more

Holley High ties in tribute to war veterans
with 'South Pacific' performance

Holley Jr./Sr. High School is presenting "South Pacific" Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is set on an island in the Pacific during WWII. The Holley production features the talents of junior and senior high school students cast in over 100 parts. more

Monroe Community College will be hosting an honors reception at the college's Brighton Campus, 1000 East Henrietta Road, on Thursday, March 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for area high school students who have excelled academically. more

The Holley Central School District will hold registration for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten on Thursday, March 13 from 1 to 7 p.m. only in the Holley Elementary School library classroom. more

Student helps fire department
WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center student Kristina Sheerens is helping the Chili Fire Department Company 2. Kristina is a volunteer firefighter and is also machining parts for the department's new fire truck. The second-year machine shop student from Churchville-Chili was approached by her captain, Ken Wojtylak, to make a part out of aluminum for holding power saws on the truck. more

Students make roses out of steel
WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center teacher Mike Sorrentino assigned a fun project for his second-year welding students, while teaching valuable skills on the curriculum. Students made roses by welding two metals together, mild steel and stainless steel, using gas tungsten arc welding. more

"Celebration of Seniors" raises funds for local meal programs
Monroe County Office for the Aging (MCOFA) hosts the 6th Annual Miles for Meals Walkathon, a "Celebration of Seniors," on Saturday, June 14, in Highland Park, starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers from Meals on Wheels and the county's congregate meal programs at area senior centers make this annual event benefiting the two programs possible. The Miles for Meals Walkathon is the only fundraising event held on behalf of Meals on Wheels and the congregate meal program. more

Hilton-Parma seniors set trip schedule
Several one-day trips to places of interest are offered to Hilton-Parma area senior citizens age 55 and up. These trips are subsidized by the Town of Parma; therefore only Town of Parma residents are eligible for a reduced rate. more

Basketball player receives honors
Kristen Clark, a senior forward for SUNY Brockport, was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year February 27. She received the honor for the second consecutive year at the annual SUNYAC awards dinner held at the Holiday Inn in Utica, New York. more

Best friends qualify for snowboarding finals
Hilton residents Bryan Milne and Mark Croce qualified for the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge Finals to be held at Loon Mountain, New Hampshire on March 29. more

Bright Raven's boys win
The Bright Raven Gymnastics Boys Team traveled to East Syracuse February 16 to compete in the 5th annual Coaches Classic earning many top honors. more

Brockport Cheerleaders winter banquet
Brockport Cheerleaders celebrated the winter season at a banquet held on March 1. All freshmen, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders were honored. more

Cadets win first title
It was a fitting ending. Marisa Clark calmly sinking both free throws with thirteen seconds left in regulation giving the Hilton Cadets a three-point lead. Spencerport's three-point attempt was no good in the final seconds giving the Cadets a 44-41 victory and their first-ever Section Five girls' basketball championship. more

Tri-Couty team wins tournament
The Tri-County Bantam House A team came home champions from the Rome Grizzlies Hockey Tournament February 14 to 16. After losing its opening game of the tournament, the Tri-County team had three decisive wins to earn the championship. more
