Funding flags for fair building is service project for horse club
The Orleans County Prayer Riders of New Covenant Worship Center in Holley are working on a major fundraising project. They are raising money to purchase 62 American flags (bunting style) to use as banners to hang in the Orleans County Fair Horse Barn. more

Input invited on Adams Basin bridge’s future rehab
The New York State Department of Transportation is in the process of developing design studies for the rehabilitation of the Washington Street Lift Bridge in the hamlet of Adams Basin, in Ogden. NYSDOT will host a public information meeting to update the community on the project plans and to solicit input and comments. more

MADD Tri-County DWI planning victim memorial garden
Each year at Highland Park, MADD Tri-County Chapter plants a "garden" of wooden stakes with MADD red ribbons attached to them. Each stake bears the name of a DWI victim. The garden stands for five days and is visited by the Rochester media as well as many DWI victims and their families. more

Nativity teens seek to ride the River of Life
High school age members of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Youth Group are embarking on a fund raising campaign to enable them to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference to be held in Houston, Texas, November 13-16. more

North Greece Fire District discusses station relocation
The Commissioners of the North Greece Fire District will hold a public meeting at the Fireman’s Field, 3666 Latta Road, on Wednesday, March 19 at 7 p.m., to discuss a bond referendum to relocate Station #1 from its present location at 3564 Latta Road to 645 North Greece Road. more

The Parma Steppers keep on dancing
The Parma Steppers have recently lost a special person, Berna Prehn, who for years was the unquestioned leader and inspiration behind this group of dancers. Berna recently passed away from complications due to the return of cancer. Her enthusiasm for life and dancing will be sorely missed by her fellow "steppers" as well as the many lives she touched at the Hilton-Parma Senior Center. more

Residents register disapproval of Albion landfill possibilities
It was standing room only on March 10 as residents waited their turn to voice their concerns to Town of Albion officials on the proposed reopening of a landfill in Albion. Many residents had to wait in the hallway in order to switch places with someone inside the filled-to-capacity meeting room when it came their time to speak. Of all the people who spoke out during the meeting, no one voiced a favorable opinion on the landfill. more

Scouting for Food Campaign gets underway
More than 10,000 local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will distribute door hangers throughout Monroe County on Saturday, March 22. Residents may participate by placing non-perishable food items in a recycled plastic bag at their front door by 9 a.m. on March 29. more

Sugaring off season underway for Maple Sunday
"The family that saps together sticks together," Sandy Shay, of Maple Grove Farm joked. Shay is the sister of husband and wife team, Jim and Deb Day, who own and operate the fifth generation family farm in Holley, and she is a frequent helper during the tapping season, as is Jim and Deb's son, Bob. more

Support provided military families
The Chili American Legion Post 1830 has announced the availability of a little known program available to families of men and women called to active duty in our nation’s military service. This service is known as “The American Legion Family Support Network.” more

Area churches host student lock-in
Area students in grade 6-12 are invited to attend Midnight Madness 2003 at SUNY Brockport’s Tuttle Complex. This all-night lock-in will begin at 8:30 p.m., March 21 and will conclude at 6 a.m., March 22. A collaborative effort between Brockport Free Methodist Church, Christ Community Church and Edgewood Free Methodist Church, this event is designed for students to have a night full of fun. more

Cyclists sought for fundraiser
Rochester Raging Rhinos goalkeeper and 1996 Player of the Year, Billy Andracki, has joined the American Diabetes Association in the fight against diabetes. He is challenging local cyclists to untap the determination, strength and courage it takes to participate in the 11th Annual Tour de Cure. more

The Hilton Apple Festival Board of Directors for 2003 is in search of a logo. The logo must be an original (non-copyrighted) and must be suitable for silkscreening or embroidery. more

Folk group coming to Brockport
Traditional Jewish folk music comes to SUNY Brockport on Thursday, March 27 in a 7:30 p.m. concert at the Tower Fine Arts Theatre, Holley Street. The 12 Corners Klezmer Band will play their freylekhs, or happy tunes. more

Hamlin Lions Peace Poster awards
The Hamlin Lions Club held their pizza party awards ceremony for the entrants of the Peace Poster contest on January 17. This year's theme was "Dreaming of Peace." more

Hamlin snow hill remains open
Due to the tremendous response to the snow hill built for the first annual Snow Day in Hamlin, it has been decided to leave the hill up until the end of the season. more

Kids safety program offered
A safety program providing families with safety information as part of Spencerport Schools’ Kids and Company Together for Safety program will be presented at 7 p.m. on March 31. The program, which is supported by a grant the district received, is part of the district’s health curriculum. more

Police investigate Holley death
The Holley Police Department is investigating the accidental death of 77 year old Holley resident, Lucille McMullen. more

Scouts advance in rank
Chili Boy Scout Troop 53 held a Court of Honor February 24 to present merit badges and rank advancements. Mike Pehta achieved the rank of Life Scout. To earn Life, a scout must be active in the troop for six months and hold leadership for six months as Star rank. more

Spring hours begin at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, located in the Towns of Shelby and Alabama, will be open on weekends through the end of May from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. This is in addition to its regular business hours of Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Flyway Nature Shop, operated by the Friends of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, Inc., will also operate during these hours. more

The Landing "Comfort Corps" drop-off site
The Landing of Brockport will be a drop-off site for the American Red Cross "Comfort Corps" program through March 21. more

Nesbitt honored for "Perfect Voting Record"
New York Farm Bureau has recognized Assemblyman Charles H. Nesbitt as a legislator with a perfect voting record in the interests of New York agriculture throughout the 2002 legislative session. more

Penalty for DWI offenses involving children strengthened
The NYS Senate passed legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Alesi which would strengthen existing DWI law by adding an additional crime to the charges intoxicated drivers would face if they are transporting minors at the time of the offense. more

Republican candidates endorsed for Clarkson offices
At the March 6 meeting, the members of the Clarkson Republican Committee endorsed the following persons to be the Republican Party candidates in the November 2003 elections: Town Justice - Richard Alexander; Supervisor - Paul M. Kimball; Town Clerk - Francis B. Wilcox; Town Council (two) - Christa L. Filipowicz, Harlan R. Purdy. more

The public is invited to attend the 2003 Churchville-Chili District Art Show. Love-A-Book ends with prizes
The Byron-Bergen Elementary School’s Third Grade Annual Love-A-Book Reading Incentive ended on Friday, February 28 with a final prize drawing. Kali Galen, a third grader in Mrs. Darocha’s class, earned the Love-A-Book Grand Prize, which included a movie, stuffed animal and other toys. more

Nominations for the Hilton Central School District Support-Related Professional of the Year will begin a program of honoring the skills and initiative shown by Hilton staff members. Nominations are due April 30, according to teacher assistant Harriet Adams, chairperson of the Selection Committee. more

Bernabi Elementary School is planning its Eighth Annual Writing Night for Wednesday, March 19, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., in the cafeteria. Writing Night is a family event featuring a reading and visual presentation of the story Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran. more

Chili Senior Center spring offerings
The Chili Senior Center announces the following activities for the spring season. A three-week program to help people with arthritis learn ways to take control of their illness will be held on Tuesdays, April 29 to May 13 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. more

Everything adds up in Parma
Each year Hilton-Parma Recreation joins with a dedicated group of volunteer tax preparers to offer area seniors tax preparation services. Appointments are made for Tuesday or Thursday mornings at the Village Community Center through April 10. more

Hamlin Recreation offers Bow Safety course
Hamlin Recreation will offer a Bow Safety course on April 1, 3 and 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a free program for individuals ages 12 and up. more

Letchworth offers trout fishing program
Letchworth State Park will be hosting a Trout Fishing Clinic on Saturday, March 22 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Conference Room at the Park Visitor Center, located just south of the Castile Entrance. more

Miner gives Blue Devils first title
Jarrod Miner scored just minutes in overtime to give the Brockport Blue Devils a 5-4 win over Williamsville North and the Division I high school hockey state championship at the Utica Memorial Auditorium March 9. more

Munn students learn golf skills
Fifth and sixth graders from the William C. Munn School in Spencerport have been learning some of the fine points of golf. Physical Education teachers Carolyn Rogers and Charlie Breehl assisted the students under the guidance of P.G.A. Professional Jim Muszak in learning basic golf techniques. more

Six local players named hockey All-Stars
Six high school hockey players for local schools were among 37 players named to the Monroe County High School Hockey League 2002-03 All-Star Teams. more

Spencerport teams qualify for scholar awards
Five of the winter athletic teams at Spencerport High School qualified for the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award during the 2002 season. more

T’ai Chi offered through Hilton-Parma Rec
Hilton-Parma Recreation is offering a continuation of their T’ai Chi program this spring, beginning on Monday, March 24 and ending May 12 (eight lessons). A beginner class will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and an intermediate class for those “continuing the form” will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. All classes will be held at the Village Community Center, 59 Henry Street in Hilton. Cost is $59. more
