Saying it didn't take him long to recognize the caliber of officers he was working with in Brockport, the chief decided to take the knowledge public and begin a recognition program within the department. "It's easy to take for granted the officers and the job they do," Brockport Police Chief Daniel Varrenti said. "I compare these officers to any police department in the state." more

Children collect books for second Philippines Library
For the second year, the children and young people of Trinity Episcopal Church, 3450 Ridge Road West, are collecting books of all sorts to send to a school in the Philippines to create a library for use by teachers and students. more

Chili Public Library programs
Registration for Preschool Storytime for 4 and 5 year olds will begin Monday, March 31. The storytimes start the week of April 14 and run for 5 weeks. They will be held 1:30 p.m. Mondays, 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. Thursdays. Call 889-2200 or stop in at the Chili Public Library to register beginning March 31. more

Monroe County entities pass agreement on sales tax sharing
Monroe County municipalities and school districts have agreed on a new four-year sales tax sharing plan. The "Saint Patrick's Day Agreement" will mean that Monroe County will continue to share an equal dollar amount of its four percent portion of the sales tax with the City of Rochester, while maintaining past levels of sharing with the towns, villages and suburban school districts. more

Navy Club of Lake Ontario celebrates 11th birthday
With over 30 members in attendance, the Navy Club of Lake Ontario, on Clinton Street in Brockport celebrated its eleventh birthday with a dinner and the installation of its officers held Saturday, March 15. more

Ogden library and Spencerport village receive grant for walking tour
The New York Council for the Humanities has awarded a grant to the Ogden Farmers’ Library and the Village of Spencerport that will result in the installation of a summer-long walking tour of the canal and business district areas of the village. more

Ordination of new pastor announced
The congregation of Concordia Lutheran Church, Brockport, is pleased to announce that Vicar Roger A. Kimmel has accepted the call to be pastor at Concordia. A Service of Ordination and Installation will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 6601 Fourth Section Road, Brockport. more

Residents invited to share some fresh air with a city child
Area residents are invited to volunteer for The Fresh Air Fund and host an inner-city child this summer. Underprivileged New York City children who participate in the fund's Friendly Town Program can experience simple summer pleasures like skipping rocks across a lake, smelling newly cut grass, and making new suburban and country friends. more

Trustee seats filled in Holley
A retired math teacher and the village's former mayor were chosen by Village of Holley voters to fill two trustee seats. John Kenney, in his first bid at public office, received 247 votes, the most garnered by any of the candidates. Louis Passarell, former mayor and a retired police chief in the village, received 182 votes. more

Walker Exempts offers scholarship
Candidates are being sought by the Walker Exempts for a scholarship named after Alan Haight. Haight, a dedicated Walker Fire Department member, gave much to his community and was also involved in numerous county and New York state related fire department and emergency services activities. more

Youth banquet to honor community service
The Orleans County Youth Board will honor individuals for their service to the community at the 21st Annual Youth Recognition Banquet to be held Wednesday, May 14. more

The Mental Health Association is now providing its Support Group Directory on-line. The directory lists over two hundred groups in the community covering a wide variety of mental health topics and can be accessed through the Mental Health Association's website. more

RTS Director updates transportation plan
Brockport Rotary President Norm Knight presents a club banner to RTS Director Don Riley. Riley spoke on the Rochester Transit System's ridership and plans for a new bus terminal in Rochester. Present plans call for the "Rochester Central Station" to be built on Clinton and Main. more

Spencerport unit hosts county auxiliary
Members of the Spencerport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will host the April 2 meeting of the Monroe County Auxiliary at the Fireman's Field Building. more

CC music department presents first jazz concert
The Churchville-Chili music department will present an evening of jazz Thursday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Churchville-Chili Junior High Commons. This concert will be the first all-jazz program in what is hoped to be an annual event. more

Hilton Central Schools jump - for Heart, that is. Seventy Hilton students and their parents participated in the annual Jump Role-A-Thon for Heart. Jumping rope, bouncing on a mini tramp, calisthenics, aerobic exercising, pogo stick jumping and dancing were all done to help fight heart disease and stroke. more

To celebrate "School Breakfast Week" Holley students received raffle tickets for every day they ate a healthy breakfast, whether at home or at school. At the end of the week, drawings were held for prizes. more

Holley students place third in OM competition
Holley's sixth- and seventh-grade Odyssey of the Mind team took third place in Division II of this month's competition in Canandaigua. The team presented a farm skit for the "Fooled Ya!" problem. more

Senior Bash set for Hilton HS
The Hilton High School Class of 2003 will hold a Senior Bash, Saturday, April 5, from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The evening begins at 9 p.m. at Hilton High School where WPXY's "Groove Shack" deejays will host contests and music. Participants will be bused to Jillian's, a High Falls club and restaurant in Rochester at 1 a.m. more

Travel to the South Pacific at Churchville-Chili High School
South Pacific, a play about servicemen and women during World War II, will be presented by Churchville-Chili high school drama students, this spring. This year, World War II veterans from the community will also play a role in this production, and the audience can watch for them on stage along with the student performers. more

Local swim club competes in Syracuse
The SPUR swim club culminated its season in sending 11 swimmers to 14 and Under Niagara District Golds, held at Nottingham High School, Syracuse. Out of the 48 teams present, SPUR swim team placed ninth overall, in team standings. more

Martial arts team places in tournament
The International Federation of Karate (IFK Kyokushin) recently sent a team to Montreal Canada to compete in teh Mas Oyama World Cup Karate Tournament held March 8. more

Mondy on way to breaking records
Dean Mondy of SEAS Swim Club of Brockport may be on his way to breaking a record dating back to 1979 held by Sean Sammler. At the swim championships held March 15 at Webster Aquatic Center, Mondy swam the Men's 8 and Under 25 yard Butterfly in 15:39, a record. more

Teams can register for 4x4 basketball league
Hamlin Recreation will be accepting teams for a spring 4x4 Basketball league through April 2. Games will be scheduled on Saturdays beginning April 5 and ending May 10. more

Toy Show is Sports Booster's fundraiser
The Spencerport Sports Booster Club will host their 3rd Annual Toys For Sports fundraiser on Saturday, April 5 at the Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport. The Toy Show opens 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults, children 12 and under are free. more
