Border security enhanced
Enhanced border security efforts were announced by Governor George E. Pataki as part of the state's war contingency plan, Operation NYShield. The governor and State Police Superintendent James W. McMahon have implemented stepped-up border security efforts, including the deployment of a significant number of additional State Troopers to cover the border and provide increased commercial vehicle inspections. more

Four Erie Canal bridge projects scheduled
The NYSDOT will undertake a $1.6 million project to rehabilitate four bridges spanning the Erie Canal in western Monroe and Orleans counties this year. Specific locations include Butts Road on the east side of Albion, Marshall Road on the west side of Medina in the town of Ridgeway, Groth Road in the town of Murray and Trimmer Road in the town of Ogden. more

Golf tourney and fashion show benefit women's cancer group
On Sunday, May 18, Chili Country Club is sponsoring a Ladies Day Golf Tournament and Fashion Show Fundraiser to help support the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation(GCF). The day will begin with a golf tournament, followed by a dinner and golf fashion show. Attendees may purchase clothing with 10 percent of the proceeds being donated to the GCF. more

Governor visits families of deployed 427th Support Battalion troops
Governor George E. Pataki met last week with family members and friends of the New York National Guard troops from the 427th Support Battalion in Rochester who have been mobilized for federal active duty in connection with "Operation Iraqi Freedom." more

Heightened pesticide security advised
With spring just around the corner and with our nation's threat level at high (orange), agribusiness, farmers, golf courses, and lawn care businesses should be especially vigilant regarding the physical security of any and all chemicals. More specifically, we are concerned about the misuse of fertilizers and pesticides; security of aerial application equipment; and the potential for an intentional introduction of human, livestock or plant diseases. more

Interim Pastor at Chili Presbyterian Church
Starting, April 1, the Reverend Michael Capron will be the Interim Pastor of Chili Presbyterian Church, 3600 Chili Avenue in Chili. Rev. Capron comes from the First Presbyterian Church in Williamson, NY. His first worship service in Chili will be Sunday, April 6 at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. with a "Pot Luck Luncheon" following the second service. more

Jars of Clay coming to SUNY Brockport
Brockport Student Government has announced that Grammy Award-winning Contemporary Christian band Jars of Clay will perform Sunday, April 6, at 8 p.m. in the Tuttle South Gym, on the campus of SUNY Brockport. more

Opponents of the proposed expansion to the Orleans County Landfill, Waste Management officials and representatives from the County Planning Board met March 20 to rehash landfill topics. more

Officers in Oak Orchard Yacht Club begin terms of office
Oak Orchard Yacht Club installed new officers at the annual Commodore's Ball held at the Clubhouse near Point Breeze on Lake Ontario. The ceremony was attended by over 40 members and guests from the Orleans and Genesee county area. more

Orleans Chamber begins recruiting effort
Volunteer recruiters from the Orleans County Chamber of Commerce are calling prospective members to set up appointments to talk to businesses about the benefits of chamber membership. The chamber hopes to bring in 50 new members by the end of the memberships drive on April 11. more

Repairs coming to NY 390
New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Joseph H. Boardman has announced that DOT has awarded a nearly $4 million contract to restore a section of NY 390 in the Town of Greece in Monroe County. Work on the project began Monday, March 24 and will take most of the summer to complete. more

Send phone cards to U.S. troops
The American Red Cross in Orleans County is the beneficiary of a new program offered by Prosodie Interactive that provides phone cards that can be purchased for American military personnel or be donated to non-specified members. The military prepaid calling card, sold in $15, $25 or $50 increments, comes with an option to set up a voice mailbox where messages can be left for the military person who is the recipient of the card. more

Spencerport Municipal Electric gives energy saving bulbs to customers
The Spencerport Municipal Electric (SME), in conjunction with the Independent Energy Efficiency Program, Inc. (IEEP), will give two Energy Star labeled compact fluorescent bulbs to electric franchise customers at no charge. The IEEP facilitates the installation of energy efficient technologies with municipal utilities in New York state. more

Wegman Companies support
hospital's capital campaign'

The Philip Wegman Family, owners of The Landing in Brockport, donated $50,000 to Lakeside's "Building for the Next Generation" capital campaign. Representatives from Wegman Companies and The Landing presented the gift to Charles W. Smith, CEO, at a social held at Lakeside. more

Chili FD members train
Members of the Chili Fire Department brave the near zero winter temperatures for an opportunity to train on a house in Chili Center. Firefighters practiced on the roof, cutting vent holes that would be necessary to let heat and smoke out of a house if there were to be a fire. more

Dog Obedience class offered
Debbie Curtis and Alexandra Monroe will conduct eight sessions of basic dog obedience and problem solving classes for dogs of all ages, as part of Spencerport Central School's Continuing Education program. more

Entrants invited in Canal Days canoe race
Registrations are underway for the 2003 Spencerport Canal Days Canoe Race. The race will be Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m. during the weekend of Spencerport Canal Days. more

Ground broken for new town hall
An official ceremony on Monday, March 17 broke ground for the construction of a new Riga Town Hall on property located on Buffalo Road adjacent to the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post. The post donated the land for the facility. more

Hilton's Citizen of the Year
Doug Hurlbutt was the surprised and emotionally affected recipient of the Citizen of the Year award presented by Hilton Mayor Bill Carter at Doug's retirement celebration held at St. Paul Lutheran Church March 23. more

Historical Society signs 99 year lease
The Clarkson Historical Society will be meeting at 7:15 p.m. on April 2 at the Town Justice Court Building on Lake Road in Clarkson. Part of their membership meeting this month will be the signing of a 99 year lease for the 1850's Clarkson Schoolhouse with the Clarkson Community Church. more

North Greece Fire Station relocation up for vote April 2
Voters in the North Greece Fire District can vote on a referendum to relocate Station #1 from 3564 Latta Road to 645 North Greece Road. The current station is the polling place on April 2. more

Veterans Outreach Center needs volunteers
The Veterans Outreach Center needs teams and individuals from businesses, organizations, schools, or other groups to volunteer on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 (Flag Day) for the charity's Tenth Annual Flag Day Campaign. Volunteers raise awareness about Flag Day and money for the VOC by distributing handheld American flags and collecting donations in return. more

Power for Jobs Program protects jobs
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Wheatland/Rush/Riga) announced today that Sabin Metal Corporation gained approval for low-cost power under the state's Power for Jobs Program. The low-cost power will help the company retain 198 jobs, allowing it to remain competitive. more

Riga GOP selects candidates
The Riga Republican Committee has endorsed it's slate of candidates to run in this November's election. more

When asked how many different insects there are, Jonah Farnum, a second grader at Fairbanks Road School, answered, "A bizillion!" Bob Iveson, Operations Manager for Ward's Natural Science Establishment responded, "The world has millions of species of plant and animals and thousands upon thousands of insect species." more

For a good cause
Holley Elementary School's Student Council headed up a collection of supplies for U.S. troops in the Middle East. Students throughout the school and their families brought in many items, such as candy, games, books and personal hygiene items, which they will give to the Orleans County Chapter of the American Red Cross to donate to the troops. more

Ground broken for Hilton capital project
Hilton School Superintendent Dr. John Cooper joins five students from Hilton's Quest School for one of several ceremonial groundbreaking enactment's outside the Elementary School on March 21. more

Orchestras and ensembles auditions announced
The Hochstein School of Music and Dance is now accepting applications from instrumental students in grades 4 through 12 who are interested in orchestral and smaller (chamber) ensemble playing during the 2003-2004 academic year. more

at CANAM Championships in Myrtle Beach

Hilton Senior Varsity Cheerleaders captured first place with 517 points competing against 19 squads from across the country in the "Medium Size" category at the CANAM International Cheer and Dance Championships in Myrtle Beach March 22-23. more

Martial arts team places in tourney
A team from the International Federation of Karate (IFK Kyokushin) participated in the Mas Oyama World Cup Karate Tournament held in Montreal, Canada March 8. Teams competed in Kata, point fighting, full contact fighting with pads and knockdown fighting (full contact Karate without pads). more

Roberts women's soccer team adds two more CC Saints
Kimmie Hill and Kelly Monahan of Churchville-Chili High School have signed to play soccer for Roberts Wesleyan College. Both Hill and Monahan were two-sport athletes at Churchville. more

Soap Box Race set for June in Clarendon
The Town of Clarendon will host its fourth annual Soapbox Car Race on Saturday, June 7. Registration is open to anyone desiring to participate, and is not exclusive to the Clarendon community.
