Birds of prey highlight migration festival
A bald eagle, a northern saw-whet owl and a turkey vulture are just three of the raptors who will help celebrate spring migration over Braddock Bay April 11-19. Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBRR) is sponsoring its 15th annual celebration of Bird of Prey Week (BOP) in and around Braddock Bay Park, its lodge and its hawkwatching platform. more

BUM Players to present "Madwoman of Chaillot"
The BUM Players, a community theater group, takes the stage for the seventh year in a row. After last year's huge success with Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," the cast and crew are rehearsing "The Madwoman of Chaillot." The 1940s dark comedy was written by Jean Giraudoux and has been adapted by John "Mack" McCarthy, the show's director. more

Chil-e Bear joins animal scramble
One Step Tree and Lawn Care's "Chil-e Bear," one of hundreds of animals to be auctioned this fall for charity as part of the Animal Scramble, is lumbering his way toward the company's headquarters on Buffalo Road in North Chili. The polar bear, named for the way visitors mispronounce the town's name, is expected to arrive the first week of May. more

Extended Observation Unit opens at Park Ridge Hospital
Park Ridge Hospital continues to expand and improve its services to the community with the opening of an Emergency Department Extended Observation Unit. The short-stay, six-bed telemetry Observation Unit is adjacent to the Emergency Department and will provide close monitoring of patients for up to 23 hours. The unit began seeing patients April 1. more

GCC hosts NYS Job Fair
Genesee Community College hosts this year's Spring Job Fair for the State University of New York Career Development Organization. This annual Job Fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Batavia Campus. more

Hilton's man-about-town to celebrate his 85th
Inveterate writer, watercolor artist and cute curmudgeon, Hilton's Herb MacNaughton, will celebrate 85 years on the planet this April 24. Well-known as a journalist for more than two decades with columns and features in the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald's "PAssing PArade" and the Greater Seminole Sun's "Right in Our Backyard" (Pinellas County, Florida), Herb has a presence hard to miss in the village of Hilton. more

Max's Mardi Gras celebration gears up
Brockport's annual Max's Mardi Gras celebration will have more this year: more beads, more floats, more games for the kids at the festival, and more community participation. "We're going to have four inflatable games at the festival ... we've never had those before," Event Organizer Bill Andrews said. more

Miniature horses on display at club's Spring Clinic
The New York State Miniature Horse Club (NYSMHC) invites horse owners and the general public to Spring Clinic 2003, a first annual showcase event. Nationally recognized experts will give presentations on training, hoof trimming, nutrition, and showing miniature horses. more

Orleans County planners say 'no' to landfill
Saying they could see no compelling reason to authorize the re-opening of the landfill in Albion, Orleans County Planning Board members, at their regular meeting on March 27, denied a special use permit to Waste Management of New York. more

Rezoning concerns Parma residents
Manitou Parma Land Company has proposed a housing project in Parma that has neighbors upset about a possible re-zoning in the area. The project, to be known as Fairfield Place, will house 599 units which include apartments, condominiums, single adult units and single family homes. more

Spencerport budget proposal announced
The Spencerport School Board adopted a 2003-04 budget proposal of $52,374,583 at its meeting March 25. This represents a projected tax rate increase of 5.65 percent, which would be the lowest increase in several years. more

Shirts are forum for women
The national Clothesline Project will be at SUNY College at Brockport, Tuesday, April 8 to Thursday, April 10. The project was initiated to create awareness of violence against women. It is a visual display of multi-colored shirts, each representing a particular woman's experience. The shirts are decorated by a victim of violence or someone who cares about her. more

Wool shearing, combing, spinning, dyeing and weaving demonstrations will be the main attractions at the Annual Sheep Shearing Festival on Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Springdale Farm, of Northampton Park at 696 Colby Street in Ogden. The cost is only $5 per carload. more

Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School invites area senior citizens (age 50 and up) to a special luncheon Thursday, April 24 at 12:15 p.m., complete with "Broadway Show Night" talent performed. The luncheon is expected to draw seniors from all district towns: Parma, Greece, Clarkson and Hamlin. more

Holley fifth-grader places first at Regional Spelling Bee
Holley fifth-grader Kristina Martin is a stellar speller. She placed first at the Regional Spelling Bee held in Newfane on March 15. This is the second year Kristina has won the competition in which top spellers in fourth- and fifth-grade from 15 area schools compete. more

The Spencerport Jazz Choir participated in the Roxbury Choral Invitational in New Jersey on March 29. Concert, Show and Jazz choirs from across New England performed for adjudication rating as well as competing for top recognition in each category. more

The Northwest Family YMCA Gymnastics Team competed at the Western New York Cluster Championship on Sunday, March 30, in Canandaigua. Lindsay Cooper, a former Level 9 USGA gymnast, coaches the team, and a YMCA competitor herself, had their best finish this season. more

Paolini's goals clinch Cornell win
Senior forward Sam Paolini (Rochester), tallied two goals, including the game winner in the ECAC championship game March 22 to help the Cornell men's hockey team win the conference tournament for the first time since 1997. more

Parma Archers compete
A new offering in the Hilton-Parma Recreation program schedule, target archery for adults, began in the fall of 2002. Bert Marlatt, a former professional archer with nearly 40 years of experience, led the formation of the Parma Archers. more
