Spencerport CROP Walk Against Hunger set for May 4

Come rain or shine, many area residents are gearing up to join in the 2003 Spencerport Crop Walk, on Sunday, May 4. Registration and the walk will begin between 1 and 2 p.m. The 10 kilometer walk will begin and end at the Spencerport United Methodist Church on Amity Street and will follow the towpath to Adams Basin and back. A one mile walk for families or seniors is also offered.

Organized locally, the 2003 Spencerport Crop Walk has set a goal of 100 walkers and hopes to raise $10,000 to help stop hunger here in the community and around the world, through self-help development initiatives. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will go to the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf.

The 2003 Spencerport Crop Walk is one of some 2,000 interfaith, community Crop Walks taking place around the country this year under the theme, "You can make a difference." Last year, Spencerport Crop Walk raised $4,502 with 53 walkers participating.

Africa is one part of the world where Crop Walks are making a big difference - in helping people grow food for their families, in providing clean water to villages, in the struggle against the AIDS epidemic, and in countless other ways. Crop walkers are also helping to make a difference - with assistance for uprooted families around the world, with water resource development efforts across Africa, with the more than 3,200 local food pantries, food banks, and meal sites in the United States which are providing food to neighbors in need.
