A depiction of the Last Supper highlights Barb Hanf's latch hook creation.

Unique Last Supper depiction created by local crafter

On Thursday, April 17, Christians will commemorate the Last Supper, the traditional Passover meal that Jesus shared with his disciples. The Last Supper has inspired artists throughout the centuries who have depicted it in paintings, stained glass, and needlework. An impressive and unique rendition of the Last Supper makes its home in Brockport.

The First Baptist Church of Brockport displays a vividly detailed latch hook rug of the Last Supper. Barb Hanf, a life-long member of the church, created the 12-foot by 8-foot rug and donated it to the church. Volunteers made a frame to support the rug that hangs on the wall in the Kniffen Parlor.

Barb began latch hooking when her husband, Peter, became ill. "I had always been an active person," she said. "Peter needed someone with him at all times but it was often difficult to engage him in conversation. A friend had shown me some of her latch hooking and so I asked her to teach me. Latch hooking kept my hands busy while I sat with Peter."

These days, Barb spends time with family and volunteer activities. She enjoys jigsaw puzzles but no longer makes latch hook projects. "I gave it up the day Peter died," she explains. "The good Lord watches over us and fills the empty spots," she said. "Life has great meaning for me and I intend to keep involved with people and with life."
