Airport improvements win public works award
The Greater Rochester International Airport (GRIA) has been selected to receive the New York Chapter of American Public Works Association's (APWA) Project Of The Year Award. GRIA recently installed a state-of-the-art heat and power system that enables the airport to generate its own electricity while using waste heat from special electric generation equipment for space heating, cooling and hot water. more

Apprentice program seeking applicants
The Rochester Laborers' Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 435, will conduct recruitment for 12 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices through September 4, according to State Labor Commissioner Linda Angello. more

Black Creek Watershed Coalition
presents report April 29

Anyone interested in protecting and enhancing Black Creek and its environs is welcome to attend the April 29 meeting of the Black Creek Watershed Coalition, where the group will present the first draft of its "state of the basin report." "The public is welcome, the more input we have the better," said coalition member Dorothy Borgus. more

Chili Lions Club holds annual geranium sale
The Lions Club of Chili is in full swing planning their 18th annual geranium sale. The flowers arrive fresh from the greenhouse the morning of May 9. Lions will pack pre-sale orders and have them ready for pick-up after 1 p.m. Friday, May 9 or Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To choose flowers ahead of time, call either Lion Tom or Bonnie at 247-2958, Lion Art or Jean at 247-1047 or Lion Dom or Anita at 594-0839. more

Get your leaves out to the curb, because the Village of Churchville Department of Public Works is going to make one final sweep through village streets May 5 to pick up the leftovers from last fall's harvest. more

The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley is seeking vendors and donations for its Big Fat Flea Market and Garage Sale on May 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Girl Scout Program Center, 1020 John Street in West Henrietta. This event will be held rain or shine. more

Local student nominated for award
Spencerport High School student Franscesca Iraci has been nominated for the 2003 Young Woman of Distinction Award. Modeled after the ATHENA Award given each year to an outstanding professional woman in the community, the Young Woman of Distinction Award is designed to recognize young women in their junior or senior year of high school who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, volunteer service to the community and exceptional leadership qualities. more

More than 200 town of Sweden residents turned out to voice their views about the proposed construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in their town. more

Riga Town Hall set for completion by year's end
Construction has begun at the site of the Town of Riga's new, 12,000-square-foot municipal building on Buffalo Road, and officials said it could be completed as soon as November 1. "Realistically, we hope to start the new year in the building," said Town Councilman Robert Ottley, who has been involved in planning the new building for years. more

Thread and fabric arts displayed
The craftsmanship of thread and fabric arts will be displayed and demonstrated at the Rochester Museum and Science Center's Artistry in Thread Festival, Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Eisenhart Auditorium, 657 East Avenue, Rochester. more

Tractor and Machinery Training and Certification course offered
The Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Office is offering a Tractor and Machinery Training and Certification course. Successful completion of this program allows for youth under the age of 16 to engage in agricultural work activities if they are 14 or 15 years of age, despite the fact the activities are listed as "agricultural work activities classified as hazardous for youth under 16." more

Volunteers assist in towpath upkeep
The Town of Sweden Adopt-A-Trail committee will launch the 2003 season with a town-wide "sweep" of the Erie Canal towpath on Saturday, May 3. Members of the participating organizations will meet at 9 a.m. at Harvester Park on Market Street in Brockport. more

Dr. Brett Elizabeth Blake and her father, Dr. Robert W. Blake, have authored the book, Literacy and Learning. A Reference Handbook. The book is a compendium of resource materials and current practice that answers two basic questions: "What is literacy?" and "How do individuals become literate?" more

Chili Art Group plans Spring Show
Ruth Hoyler is the featured artist at the Chili Art Group's Spring Art Show and Sale beginning Friday, May 2 from 6 to 9 p.m., with awards presented at 8 p.m. The show continues Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Chili Town Hall, 3333 Chili Avenue. more

Committee formed to revise community disaster plan
The Village of Hilton and Town of Parma, along with representatives from Hilton Central Schools, Hilton Fire Department and North Greece Fire Department, are meeting to revise the current Community Disaster Plan to incorporate new federal regulations which require a Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan. more

Clinton calls for further EPA action on Diaz chemical cleanup
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote to EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman, asking the agency to further investigate and clean up the results of the Diaz Chemical contamination in Holley. In her letter, Senator Clinton vowed to continue working with the families and residents in Holley as long as it takes to ensure that their living environment is safe and healthy. more

Kendall Elementary students found the perfect way to show they care. While learning about the character trait "caring" over the past couple of months, students brought in items for a "Care Package" to send to U.S. Troops in the Middle East to show them that Kendall students are thinking about them and to say "thank you." more

SUNY College at Brockport's award-winning radio station 89.1. The Point broadcast live from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26. This was the fifth consecutive year the station has broadcast from the museum. more

Town of Chili Senior Center programs
Niagara-on-the-Lake trip - A trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake on Tuesday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The trip includes a sit-down luncheon at the Gatehouse Restaurant in downtown N-O-T-L, time for browsing in the village shops and ticket to the matinee performance of Three Sisters at the Festival Theatre. Bright Raven gymnasts win
Bright Raven gymnast Jackie VanDeWater, of Churchville, medalled at the USA Gymnastics Level 8 State Championships held on Long Island April 13. VanDeWater earned sixth place in vaulting competition with a score of 9.05. Jackie VanDeWater is a senior a Churchville-Chili High School and is planning to attend Nazareth College next year. more

Endres, Robbins net two in loss
After trailing 5-1 at halftime, the Hilton Cadets stormed back with the first three goals of the second half to close to within a goal, but couldn't hold off Brighton in a 9-5 loss in high school boy's lacrosse. more

Parrino RBI leads Blue Devils in extra frame
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning, the Brockport Blue Devils scored three runs to send the game into extra innings and two more in the eighth in a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Greece Athena in high school boy's baseball. more
