RPO performs American music from WWII

Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra present patriotic and sentimental songs from the early 1940s in a concert entitled "World War II Hit Parade." The concert will be held in the Eastman Theatre on Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m. General Admission tickets are $10 and are available at the RPO Box Office, 108 East Avenue, (454-2100), and at all Wegmans Video Departments.

"These songs are a big part of American history and they helped shape our popular music as a whole," said Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik. "Cindy Miller, a Rochester native, will bring these songs to life with her perfect mix of jazz, show and cabaret singing style."

More than fifty years after the end of World War II, this music is still considered to be some of the best pop music ever recorded. Songs such as "God Bless America," "Over There," "Don't Get Around Much," "White Cliffs of Dover" and "Victory at Sea" were standard repertoire of the day. Glenn Miller, Irving Berlin, Harry James, Count Basie and Duke Ellington were some of the famous musicians in an era of Big Bands, Swing and Caberet Music. Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Helen O'Connell were some vocalists of the day whose lyrics helped a country get through the difficult times of war, according to an RPO news release.
