Red Cross hosts 'Day of Caring' projects

Four groups volunteered their time at the Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross Friday, April 25, as part of the United Way Day of Caring.

At the Red Cross Chapter, 50 Prince Street, Rochester:

  • Ten employees from Bausch & Lomb sorted and packed comforts of home to be shipped to troops stationed overseas. Items shipped were donated from this community earlier this spring. More than 1,000 boxes have already been packed for shipping.
  • Six employees from Element K washed and organized Red Cross Disaster Action vehicles. These vehicles respond each time there is a fire in this community ... in addition to offering temporary shelter and safety for those burned out of their homes, these vehicles become mini-canteens for firefighters on the scene, serving liquids and snacks.
  • Thirty-five students from Red Cross Hispanic Youth Leadership Development Program (HYLDP) performed general landscaping on campus groups. The HYLDP programs provide opportunities for children to plan for their futures by becoming involved in their neighborhoods, learning about their history and culture, exploring educational and career opportunities, and working with others. Students can also put their skills and enthusiasm to work as volunteers in the community.

At the New York Penn Blood Services, 825 John Street, Henrietta:

  • Thirty employees from ViaHealth sorted and packed comforts of home to be shipped to troops stationed overseas. Of the eight tons of items collected during a two-week period, John Street was the final location to be sorted and packed for shipping.
