Rangers begin first varsity season

After beginning four years ago at the Modified level, the Spencerport Rangers have embarked on their first varsity season in girl's high school lacrosse under the direction of Amy Nesbitt.

With only three seniors, this season will be one of learning how to compete at the highest level against teams from the east side of Monroe County that have been playing for several years. Fifteen juniors and four sophomores complete the young roster, but Nesbitt is optimistic. "We lack the experience other teams have, yet we have a lot of talented players very excited about competing at the varsity level."

Coming off an 11-6-1 season in their junior varsity tune-up last year, the Rangers are led offensively by juniors Lauren Moscicki and Kim Pulhamus up front with seniors Katie Tyner and Nicole Garwol anchoring the defense along with Gina Martuscello and goaltender Amanda Brandt. Other players to watch this season include sophomores Katharine Kalamaroff and Jennifer Alessi and juniors Laura Stultz, Mallory Blackburn and Samantha Rhow.

The team began this season 0-3 and was to play their first home game this past Thursday against Webster Thomas. Home games will be played this season at Taylor Elementary. "We just have to learn to apply our talent so we can become a competitive force," said Nesbitt. "We'll get there, it's just going to take a little time."
