New grand piano now graces church

When a large, white truck backed up to the front door of St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Main Street in early April, passersby slowed to watch movers roll a six hundred pound grand piano into the church's sanctuary.

It's the first new instrument St. Luke's church has purchased in more than forty years.

Nearly six feet long, the Steinway-designed "Boston" piano was played for Brockport's Episcopal congregation for the first time on Easter Sunday morning.

"The new piano will not only enhance our own singing of hymns," says church rector Father David Robinson, "but it will also provide a much gentler musical support for our youth choir." It will also serve St. Luke's adult choir, a 13-voice ensemble with a broad repertoire of traditional and contemporary sacred music.

St. Luke's new piano replaces an old upright model with chipped and broken keys. The instrument joins the church's 1960s Allen organ, still played during congregational singing. Funding for the purchase of the piano came from existing endowments.

Rev. Robinson says eventually he hopes to see the piano enjoyed during public recitals and chamber concerts as well as congregational singing. Musicians with inquiries about using St. Luke's recently renovated sanctuary for public concerts may contact the church office at (585) 637-6650.

St. Luke's Church, located on Main Street in Brockport, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Sunday Services are held at 8 and 10 a.m.
