Churchville educator honored
as Woman of the Year in the Arts

Churchville-Chili Intermediate School music teacher Phyl Contestable was recognized as Woman of the Year in the Arts by the Italian American community. The award recognizes women who have made exceptional contributions to ensure the next generation will form a positive self-identity and be encouraged to carry on their work for the common good.

In addition to being an award winning music teacher, Contestable performs in a cabaret duo with Alan Jones. Contestable and Jones have performed as the opening act for Bill Cosby, Rich Little and Jackie Mason, and have been guest artists with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. They have appeared at Trump's Castle in Atlantic City, Reno, and Las Vegas, among other venues. The duo has recorded two albums/CDs. Contestable also had a successful three year run performing the lead role in the popular off-broadway musical "Nunsense."

Contestable earned a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children at SUNY Brockport. She has been a music teacher with the district for nine years. She is also the recipient of the 2000 RPO Music Teacher of the Year Award for her contributions to music education and especially to her own students.
