Food baskets delivered by cafeteria workers

Spencerport's cafeteria workers spent Thursday, April 18, their day off, sorting food and filling boxes and baskets to deliver to six district families. The spring food basket project was a way for the cafeteria workers to give back to the community.

"We want to make a difference in the community," says Kathy Odrzywolski, vice president of the Spencerport School Lunch Association and cook manager at the Taylor Elementary School cafeteria. "We have two to three meals, including hams, for each family."

The cafeteria workers filled to overflowing three boxes for each of the six families. The food was all donated by community merchants and vendors who supply the school lunch food and services. In addition to food, some companies donated children's items and gift certificates. For example, the post office in Spencerport donated coloring books. Also included were cleaning products, paper products, a bowling coupon, tooth brushes and tooth paste. One person donated a box of baby clothes for a family that is expecting soon.

Among those donating money or items: the Spencerport Teachers Association, Lunch Bytes, Jacob Stein, Tops, Wegmans, Chase Pitkin, Wal-Mart, Byrne Dairy, McDonalds and Village Donuts. Spencerport merchants and many in Brockport, Gates and Greece made donations. The food was delivered in time for Easter, for those families celebrating the holiday.
