Candlelight tour takes visitors behind the battle lines

At Genesee Country Village & Museum's Civil War Candlelight Tour on Saturday, May 24, visitors will be able to stride across battle lines to visit North and South soldiers and civilians as they deal with wartime life.

The 90-minute tour of a dozen vignettes includes: the family moment when a young son and husband takes leave of his loved ones; light-hearted exchange while soldiers share letters from home; civilians arguing about their small protests - a disguised lithograph in a southern window, an embroidered flag on a northern petticoat; the honor shown a Mexican War hero as his body is returned; the cautious interchange between lonely pickets across the battle line; the defiance of a Washington society woman under house arrest for her espionage activities. Members of the 140th New York and the 22nd Virginia reenactment groups portray the soldiers and civilians.

Because the tour involves extensive walking and depicts some grim elements of the time, it is not recommended for children under 10. Tours depart every 15 minutes, beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations are required.

Tickets are: adults $14/$12 GCVM members; youth 10-16, $8/$7 GCVM members. This event typically sells out, as space is limited. For more information, call (585) 538-6822. The museum is located at 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford.
