Nearly 100 people crowded the Town of Albion offices while at least 50 more waited outside for the official decision on whether town officials would approve Waste Management’s permits May 19. more

Appointments needed for home hazardous waste collection
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) and the towns of Hamlin, Clarkson, Ogden, Parma and Sweden and the villages of Brockport, Hilton and Spencerport have joined forces to hold an appointment only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Hamlin Highway Garage, 91 Railroad Avenue, on Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. more

As boy awaits kidney transplant, his friends hold fundraiser
When Kyle Link was just 18 months old, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Surgeons removed the kidney, and chemotherapy treatment was prescribed to eradicate the cancer. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy damaged the Greece boy's other kidney, leaving him with no kidney function, dependent on dialysis treatments. more

Auditions scheduled for boys' and young men's choir
Auditions are being held for the WolfGang Choir, an all-male chorus of boys and young men. WolfGang includes boys whose voices have changed as well as those who are still singing in their first voices. more

Creekside Café is Churchville’s new gathering place
It started as a dinner-table joke, said Jim “J.R.” Ehrmentraut, co-owner with his wife Peggy of Churchville’s new Creekside Café. “I said offhandedly we ought to buy the store and everyone got really excited,” he said. “Later on Peggy and I talked about it some more, and here we are.” more

D.A.R.E. Dance a big effort by volunteers
Officer Steven Brown of the Ogden Police Department has been working for the D.A.R.E. program for eight years. Six years ago he was talking to Spencerport teacher Fred Cardella and saying that he would not be doing the D.A.R.E. program next year because the program lost a major contributor. more

Diaz Chemical closing Holley plant
Diaz Chemical announced last week that it has ceased production at its Holley facility and they expect to spend the next two months cleaning up the Jackson Street site. The clean up includes cleaning lines and equipment and selling off chemicals that remain on-site. more

Essay contest winners chosen
Winners of the Catholic Daughters Court Nativity #931 Brockport essay contest were chosen at the group's meeting May 8. This annual contest is open to all students in the area. Topics choices were "Angels in My Life" or "The Star that Guides Me." more

Hilton Fire Captain honored for heroism
Jeff Mullen, Hilton Fire Department Captain, will be honored at a luncheon Wednesday, May 28 at the Penfield Country Club, 1784 Jackson Road, Penfield. Mullen will receive the Kiwanis International Service Award from the Monroe County Fire Service for his heroic efforts March 30, 2003 while rescuing a man from an automobile that was inside a fully involved working house fire. more

Public Power Partnership to promote electric drive vehicles in New York
New York Power Authority (NYPA) trustees have created a $1.2 million fund to help the state's municipal and rural electric cooperative systems purchase electric and hybrid-drive vehicles for their municipal fleets. The program will be conducted in cooperation with the Municipal Electric Utility Association of New York State (MEUA), whose members serve 500,000 New York electricity consumers. more

Storytelling workshops offered at Ogden Farmers' Library
The Ogden Farmers' Library is accepting applications for participation in "Tales by Generation," a storytelling series that will be taught at the library this summer. Professional storytellers Peggy and Dave Hagen will conduct a six-week series of workshops during which participants will learn how to select, rehearse and perform stories for an audience. The session will end with two public performances in August. more

When Gary Sharpe shared his dream to build an extreme skating park with his wife Pam, she was a little hesitant. "My first thought is that he was crazy," said Pam. "He's a risk taker and I'm not." Calling Gary, who has lived in Hilton all his life, a risk taker is like calling Babe Ruth an okay hitter. more

Fourteen members of Bergen Girl Scout Troop #2155 and their leader, Lori Nelson, visited Lakeside Child Care Center in Brockport and sang, "God Bless America," read books to the Lakeside children, and presented a handmade quilt. more

Safety & Prevention Kids Fair May 31 in Holley
A Kids Fair May 31 puts the focus on safety. Presented by Holley Karate, in conjunction with the Holley Police and Fire Department, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holley Elementary School - Northwest Parking Lot. In case of rain, the events will take place in the Holley Intermediate School gymnasium. more

Hilton Schools' projected tax rate increases 4.88 percent
On Tuesday, June 3, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Hilton School District residents will go to the polls to vote on two propositions: the 2003-04 Budget Proposal in the amount of $47,997,019; and a bus purchase proposition in the amount of $632,200 for six 66-passenger buses; two 18-passenger buses; and four seven-passenger vans. more

Students in grades 10-12 in the Holley Select Chorus boarded a Motorcoach Covered Wagon on Thursday, May 15 at 12:01 a.m. and headed for Liberty Island. more

Local students perform a wide variety of musical hits
On June 7 and 8, the curtain will go up on Broadway In Brockport 2003 at the Brockport High School LGI. A review of songs and scenes from the Broadway stage will be performed. This year's theme is "An Evening of Sondheim." more

Spencerport school board approves new proposed budget
The Spencerport School Board approved a new budget at its meeting May 13, based on the state budget recently passed by lawmakers in Albany. That budget provides Spencerport with more revenue than originally projected in the governor's proposed budget. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics Teams traveled to Elmira May 10 to compete in the Spring Spectacular Invitational and came home with two team awards and numerous individual honors. more

The nice weather has arrived just in time for Lakeside's 12th Annual Golf Classic to be held on Monday, June 9 at Stafford Country Club in Stafford. All proceeds will benefit Lakeside Health System services. more

Red Oak Golf hosts local qualifiers for Long Drive Championship
