As boy awaits kidney transplant,
his friends hold fundraiser

When Kyle Link was just 18 months old, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Surgeons removed the kidney, and chemotherapy treatment was prescribed to eradicate the cancer. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy damaged the Greece boy's other kidney, leaving him with no kidney function, dependent on dialysis treatments.

After two trying years, Kyle is prepared for his next big challenge - a kidney transplant. In June, Kyle will be graced with one of his father's kidneys. The hope is that he will be able to return to a more normal lifestyle that he and his family vaguely remember.

By raising money for local children's charities, Kyle's parents, AnnMarie and Larry, have made the best of a difficult situation. For two years, they have held a neighborhood carnival at their home, raising more than $3,000 for Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong and CURE Childhood Cancer Association.

This year, because of the timing of the transplant, planning a carnival is difficult. Instead, friends of the Link family are planning a weekend fundraiser, called Caring for Kids Weekend, to benefit children who suffer from kidney disease and cancer. Proceeds will benefit two local organizations, CURE Childhood Cancer Association and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Kidney Kids Club. Both organizations provide opportunities for children who have been stricken with medical conditions to engage in fun activities, as well as educational, and support services for their families.

The fundraisers will take place Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at Pleasure Lanes bowling alley, 144 South Avenue, Hilton. On Friday, a singles bowling tournament will be held at 7 p.m. Participants contribute $15 to bowl and enjoy a buffet dinner provided by Stuey's. Live music will be provided by the band De Ja Who. Just want to enjoy the music? Simply come out and support the cause, participate in a raffle, and enjoy the music.

On Saturday, Pleasure Lanes will be open free of charge from 1 to 4 p.m. for children and teenagers who have cancer or kidney problems. Their families are welcome to join them. Free entertainment includes demonstrations by members of the Hilton Fire Department, video games, a caricature artist, crafts, and other events.

Erica Brinkle of Pleasure Lanes, John Diani of Fitness Warehouse, and Dave Zajnkowski of Z's Automotive are the champions behind this Caring for Kids Weekend.
