Storytelling workshops offered at Ogden Farmers' Library

The Ogden Farmers' Library is accepting applications for participation in "Tales by Generation," a storytelling series that will be taught at the library this summer. Professional storytellers Peggy and Dave Hagen will conduct a six-week series of workshops during which participants will learn how to select, rehearse and perform stories for an audience. The session will end with two public performances in August.

The Hagens will introduce participants to the elements of story, plot, character, voice, gesture, and use of language when telling stories. The couple will work with participants to select stories, and will coach each student on learning and performing the selected story. The workshop series is open to teens and adults ages 13 and older. Teens are encouraged to participate with an adult family member and explore stories that reflect the cultural heritage of their family.

The sessions are scheduled for Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. in the library on July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7 and 14; the public performances are scheduled for Friday, August 15 at 2 p.m. at the library and Sunday, August 17 at 4 p.m. at the Clyde Carter Gazebo in Spencerport. Participants must attend each session and each public performance. The workshops and performances are all free.

The Hagens have produced a number of local storytelling workshops and have studied with nationally known storytellers Jackie Torrence, Doug Lippman and Jay O'Callahan. They will bring their expertise to Ogden and help introduce the art of storytelling to the community courtesy of a grant from the New York State Legislature, New York State Council on the Arts, and the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester. Applications are available at the library and must be returned by June 15. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis for twelve openings; successful applicants will be notified by June 20.
