Community helps send students
to vocational competition

The community is showing their support for WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center students who will be competing in the SkillsUSA-VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America) trade and leadership competitions in Kansas City, Missouri June 23-28.

Katie Cobb (Greece) and Justine Jensen (Brockport) will compete in the Community Service category, Erin Wolan (Churchville-Chili) in Dental Assisting, Daniel Wegman (Brockport) in Electronics Technology, Blake Finocchario (Greece) in Industrial Motor Control and Lyndsey Weilert (Greece) in Outstanding Chapter.

"Through student fundraisers and donations from the community, the students will have a rewarding trip to Kansas City," said Pat Scarpulla lead VICA advisor. When Spencerport dentist Dr. Jerry Cellura heard about the competition, he contributed $1,000 to help. Dr. Sandy Sorrentino, a general physician in Greece, also donated $1,000 to help promote craftsmanship in young men and women. Kevin Manna, owner of Performance Auto Parts in Brockport, donates to WE-MO-CO every year. The 1987 WE-MO-CO Auto Mechanics graduate supports the program whenever he can and credits BOCES for his success. "We are very thankful to everyone for supporting the students throughout the year with various fund raising efforts," said Scarpulla.

Students competed in several competitions leading up to the national level. In January, students competed in their classrooms. Teachers sent the top finishers from those competitions to the Area I competition in Alfred in March. From there, students competed at the state level in Syracuse in April, where 15 students finished in the top three. The six first-place winners will be among 18,000 secondary and post-secondary students from technical schools across the United States, in Kansas City's largest convention of the year.
