Brighton beats Blue Devils in extra frame

The Brighton Barons overcame a three-run deficit in the seventh inning and scored twice in the eighth to defeat Brockport 7-5 in Section Five softball playoff action and end the Blue Devils season.

Brockport tied the game 1-1 in the first inning on a Danielle LeBeau triple and a Shannon Connors sacrifice fly. They added three more runs in the fourth. Connors reached second on a throwing error and scored on a strikeout-wild pitch and another throwing error. Jamie Hugelmaier singled putting runners at first and third and promptly stole second. Colleen Russell singled in one run and Hugelmaier scored later in the inning.

After Brighton scored a run in the fifth to close to within 4-2, Brockport got their fifth run in the sixth. Cyndi Flanagan reached with a leadoff single. Brittany Doherty pinch ran, took second and third base on wild pitches and later scored on a RBI groundout by Russell.

But the Barons scored three runs in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. A two-out, two-strike single in the eighth plated what proved to be the winning runs.

The young Blue Devils squad, which featured nine juniors and three sophomores, say good-bye to seniors Meagan Conner, Colleen Russell, Erin Murray and Katie Sue Jones. They closed the season with a 12-10 record.
