Spencerport High School receives State honor

The State Education Department has awarded special recognition to the Spencerport High School Business Department. The department is the recipient of the 2003 Department of the Year Award for the nine-county region that includes Monroe County.

The award is based on several criteria that provide an exemplary business education for students, preparing them for the eventual transition from school to career. The business department has added three new courses in the past two years: Principles of Marketing, Career Connections and Computer and Technical Education, which offers the first non-BOCES, public school industry-standard certification for students in the state.

High school students can also participate in the Co-op Work Program and the student bookstore, giving them work experience. Career Day, the Court Tour program for Business Law students and job shadowing also provide an in-depth look at careers.

In addition, students can take four courses where they can earn college credit through Monroe Community College. The business program is rounded out with character education, interdisciplinary projects, student leadership opportunities, industry-standard technology incorporated into class work and an infusion of universal life skills.
